/MSG/ - milsurp general

In this edition of Milsurp International we explore what the size of your barrel says about you.
Are longbois trying to compensate or does a long barrel really correlate with a long gun bag?

I have both long and truncated bois

Long guns look more elegant for display.

Hi dad

Attached: 01.png (2012x492, 2.39M)

Found an Ishapore no1 mk3 DP for $50.
I know it's a DP but it's still neat and I can hang it on my wall.

Do you guys do anything to clean up the furniture on your surps? Someone suggested to me that linseed oil is good, but I heard its actually really bad to use.

>Step 1: Damp rag
>Step 2: Leave it the fuck alone.

It's not the length of the barrel that matters; it's the rigidity.

This.Though I would use a lint free cloth to dry it afterwords. Wood seriously doesn't need much if the environment you keep it in is stable (40-80 degrees, 30-55% humidity).

I should call it "Ernie".

I'm indecisive and require input. I have the option of buy a Vergeuiro M1904/39 for $400.00, or trading pic related for a Steyr M95 and ~300.00-ish rounds of 8x56R. It's not actually a Walther - it's a Manurhin P.1 - but it is West Berlin Police marked. I paid $312.00 after tax and transfer. What do?

Attached: IMG_20190802_224555.jpg (3120x4160, 2.42M)

Give me the P1 and buy the Verguiero.

All these french rifles are making me cream with jealousy. Why oh why are they so rare, cant find any myself under 1k

Oh Jesus, I write like a retard or a Russian.
Money can be exchanged for goods and services.

Take the Mannlicher pill

You gotta be patient.

>trading pic related for a Steyr M95 and ~300.00-ish rounds of 8x56R
Rifle or carbine? I'd do that for a M95 rifle in a heartbeat.

Berthiers are cheap.

That shit was redonculous.

Attached: Untitled.png (1156x877, 188K)

I was so fucking lucky with that one.

First type, prewar production, all serialized parts matching, and all non-serialized parts consistent with first type pattern (including the absence of the idiot-proof hole in the bayonet).

I snagged it this morning in a gun fair at 750€, at least 250 € below market price in France. I am so glad I dragged my ass out of bed early this morning, one hour later and it might have been gone.

Carbine, but I know where a long rifle will be for sale soon.

I'd skip on the carbine for the long rifle. I wouldn't make that trade if I were you.

I got the Lee Navy.

I am literally ejaculating right now.

Have fun they are nice rifles.
Ammo is a pain in the ass though.

Show us for fucks sake

That was worded poorly. I meant "I just got one of the 2 lee-navies on auction at RIA".

If you're not careful, you'll give me secondhand ejaculation. I've wanted one of those rifles since I was 14. Are you going to form and load for it?

Bet your ass I will. although not before careful reading about it.

The basic level of research I've down into it cautions against using .30-40 Krag brass as a parent case. It's a little more work, but since .220 Swift was developed from 6mm Lee Navy, my instinct would be to use it instead.

Also do not use .243 bullets.

.243 is the correct size for all variations of the cartridge.

I'm almost positive the .236 bullet is what was originally used for the military loaded ammo.

Miliary ammo was always .243.
The land diameter was .236

It's .236. Literally google .236 Lee Navy

not him, but Ian says .243 here in the comments:
forgottenweapons.com/winchester-lee-navy-safety/

I would tend to trust him in such matters, with verification.

long enough to counter cavalry charges.

Attached: IMG-20170817-WA0013.jpg (1600x898, 111K)

Fuck user, how much did that cost you? As a poorfag, I can't even imagine how much I'd have to spend for a Lee Navy.

$2250, plus buyer premium, plus overseas port, plus tariffs (I live in France) + the red tape involved in importing a firearm from out of Europe. gonna sting a bit, but hey, it's a Lee Navy.

The other one (the one presented by Ian) reached almost $4000. it's in slightly better state than mine, but mine has its bayonet.

You better cherish the Lee forever, user. I wish I could afford to drop that kind of money on surp but alas. You better post pics when you get it.

will the milsursp market exist in 2021/22?

Most likely. It'll be more expensive, and potentially more regulated but still there

but how much more expensive? also i'm assuming that you're speaking about the american market only?

The only MilSurp I have is a Nugget and I want a Swiss K31 but those are really pricey, plus their ammo is hard to come by, just can't drop by the local store and pick up some.

Behold the future for the surplus shooter.

Attached: 20190708_222215.jpg (4032x2268, 2.9M)

Trading an m91 carcano plus 100$ for a gew88/05 commission rifle

>7.5 Swiss and 7.62x54r
>pricey
begone poorfag

Attached: weeb autism '41.jpg (4032x1598, 3.44M)

Wait, handloading isn't a thing in the US for surp shooters?

I dunno man. I can't tell the future, and no, that's all markets. Out of production guns, growing restrictions and growing and even stagnant interest means increased prices.
Have you heard of the internet?

There’s a pristine mas36/51 at my local shop

I live in an apartment complex type of building and anything larger than a 12x12 envelop is left in front of the building's main door. Don't dare order anything bigger for obvious reasons.

>what is P.O Box
>What is requesting the delivery service to hold for pickup

Not as much as it should be.

i somehow would like to handload.
but im too lazy.
luckily there is ppu.

Attached: IMG_20190714_153658_559.jpg (2304x1728, 610K)

could be a while. count one month to get the paperwork, one month to get through customs and one month at Saint-Etienne for testing, verification and categorization.

go for the rifle but get info about the bore condition first.

Attached: IMG_20190714_153049_828.jpg (2304x1728, 728K)

>Not learning to handload

I like long bois because they're long, I also like short bois because they're handy.

Attached: JAP - Type 99 Long rifle.jpg (4032x2268, 2.42M)

Save all the PPU brass. They have good quality stuff that is reloadable.

That's a good deal from what I've heard. Not many MAS36s or 49s left in France and they go for so much money I know some French collectors just buy them in the US and import them.

I got a June of 1940 made one that I bought for only $600 just because no one else bid thanks to the auction being titled MAS 1936 and not MAS36. Even better is that I don't think it has been fired since it was prooved at St. Etienne. There's not a primer ring and I can still see the tooling marks in the barrel. Being so late in production I would imagine it was left in some Vichy storeroom for years until some US Army private shipped it home.

Just dropped $1600 on an SVT... I know, but it’s a dream gun for me and has been for a while. 1941 Izhevsk forced match arsenal refurb. Rails but notch :( shellac is a little dinged up, but the metal is pretty damn good and the barrel is dark but has strong rifling. Tell me, how bad did I do?

*no notch

Not awful by the looks of the ones that sold on Gunbroker.

Attached: POL - Wz 29.jpg (2560x1440, 1.05M)

Guy had a mas36 for $650 at the gun show this weekend. Hate myself for being indecisive on buying it but I wonder how much 7.5 french I could find anyways.

Attached: 20416540qe.jpg (792x477, 194K)

Shame, I shoot mine as frequently as I can manage.

That’s what I sorta figured, I just know they can go for like $1200-1300 sometimes still. Barely missed out on a cheaper Finn capture right before so I really didn’t wanna lose out again lol. Hopefully she shoots well. I’m thinking about putting a repro PU scope on it and loctite-ing the rails without the little cross pin in, apparently some people have had some decent results with repro mounts having a really tight fit.

Are the rifles with the LG48 grenade launcher sight rare? I've now realized it's one of those.

I don't think so? I dunno.

Attached: SWI - 1889 Schmidt.jpg (3954x748, 1.87M)

Got my first gun on my C&R license, a 1910s manufactured Spanish S&W copy. It's very well made, much better than most other Spanish pistols I've seen. I've paired it with my arisaka here because a lot of Japanese soldiers and officers privately bought handguns from Spain. This one is in .38 long Colt but a .38 special fits right in. Probably wouldn't shoot it with specials tho.

Also all of you bragging about long guns have nothing on my Vetterli, shits taller than my girlfriend with the bayonet. Very funny to watch her try and shoulder it.

Attached: IMG_20190908_135328600.jpg (4000x1543, 1.98M)

Probably not much longer than this.

Attached: USA - 1884 Trapdoor Springfield.jpg (3999x823, 1.93M)

>His barrel is under 30 inches
How will you stop a Calvary charge with only a 29 inch barrel you fools
Turkish GEW 98 with 29" barrel for comparison

Pre 1890 gang rise up. Always wanted a trapdoor. Do you shoot it? This is my 1881 produced 1870 Italian vetterli, bubba'd by Luigi for emergency service in WW1. Shoots 6.5 carcano but I load them to about half loads to avoid damage as it was originally made for black powder. Will have range pics one day. Feels like shooting a .22 magnum because it weighs a fuckton. Accuracy is decent enough for a 139 year old Italian rifle.

Attached: IMG_20190908_195908096.jpg (3932x2428, 3.01M)

I have failed to win the Type 97.

Attached: YuuriSad2.png (765x1080, 849K)

I have shot it, but I dont' shoot that much and I probably won't shoot that one in particular very often either. When you're dealing with guns this old it's not a great idea.

I have one box of ammo for this one, but it's from PCI so I'm hesitant to even try it.

You'll win eventually.

Attached: USA - 1868 Trapdoor Springfield.jpg (3997x721, 1.9M)

What caliber is it? 50-70? Black powder ammo probably won't hurt it

yep. what do you use for case lube?

Yeah, but PCI has a shit reputation and probably isn't black powder.

Attached: FIN - M39.jpg (3688x707, 1.73M)

Swiss Vetterli to Springfield trapdoor is neck to neck. Mauser 71 is ahead by a nose (and the longest surp in my collection).

>Italian vetterli
Finger fucked, but don't own one. The surp dealer has one but the sleeved barrel drives it to a last buy option.

Attached: Long.jpg (949x3086, 485K)

Yes, LG48 Mas 36 rifles are pretty rare.

I SHOULD use sizing wax but often I just use Hornady lube.

Attached: 20190904_091707.jpg (3876x962, 3M)

The Lebel barrel is 31 inches.

the one shot stuff?

I'm at a point where I enjoy learning as much about 'surp as I do shooting it and searching for it. I'm tossing around the idea of starting a proper book collection to go along with my rifles - what books should make up the "fundamentals" of a milsurp knowledge library?

If there's a specific era or country that you are interested in you should focus on them. Generalized books are usually going to be thin on detail.

That said, if you're interested in milsurp in general then Mauser Bolt Rifles is still being updated, and Bolt Action Military Rifles gives a decent overview of the most common rifles you're going to find from every country.

The new Carcano book, the FN Mauser book, and Ians French rifle book are good ones that are readily available.

Depends on the gun it could have been worth it, could have not.
I got another I can shoot. I don't have to shoot every gun I own.

Attached: IMG_2436.jpg (962x1156, 792K)

Oh I thought they were 29 inches for some reason.

New Carcano book?

Attached: ITA - M38 Carcano Carbine.jpg (3258x795, 1.6M)

Long rifles are more elegant in my opinion

Attached: 0627181644-1.jpg (3779x1323, 1.3M)

>Ians French rifle book
>readily available

It's not shipping for another 2 months

My rule of thumb is usually a new milsurp rifle gets a book specifically about it if possible. Good luck finding Turkish Mauser info in book form, I've seen online but hard copies are nice

>all these shitty cut-down Greek 1903/14s
itsallsotiresome.jpg

I doubt there's even books in English for a lot of my guns.

You know what I mean shit dick.
amazon.com/Model-1891-Carcano-Rifle-Developmental/dp/0764350811
Mannlicher Military rifles is also acceptable but a bit sparse. Still, there aren't any proper English books on Mannlichers (yet).

Attached: 20181012_102141.jpg (3806x1010, 3.1M)

Do you have Francis Allen's Siamese Mauser book?

>amazon.com/Model-1891-Carcano-Rifle-Developmental/dp/0764350811
That's-a spicy meat-a-ball.

Attached: CarcanoM91_03-03-2019_A.jpg (1200x800, 560K)

You have great taste. Get a snider, it belongs

Welp, missed out on that then. $650 seemed like a fine price anyways especially when you factor in FFL fees and shipping from a gunbroker auction on a 'cheaper' rifle.

Saturday is going to be Mannlicher day

Attached: IMG_20190909_095107.jpg (1585x1258, 366K)

>FN Mauser book
If you're talking about the one by Vanderlinden I'd really recommend that one even if you don't intend to get into FN Mausers. I was at a Boomer gun club meeting where he was presenting on FN Mausers and got a signed copy of his book from him and it's pretty extensive. It's a nice mix of in-depth information about different models and a general overview of FN, and it's got enough pretty pictures and neat information that I'd even consider it a reasonably decent coffee table book on top of being a reference book.

Attached: Yugokarev.jpg (2048x1536, 464K)

Lots of good shit in that book. Interesting in that according to Vanderlinden there's no evidence that Argentina ever ordered Model 1935s from FN like Colin Webster claims in his book.

Attached: M1903_klit.jpg (1200x1600, 1.24M)

Hey, weren't you looking for a book on Czech Mausers one time? There's a link here to a PDF of Miroslav Sada's book. The spam filter won't let me post the direct link:
