Now when somebody you know from childhood who knows you're disabled calls you a retard at a family dinner trying to hurt you, it's a same insult, but it's very very different. That's not just banter between friends who don't care to be politically correct or are even really thinking that deeply about what they're saying, that's somebody going as far below the belt as they could to hurt me on the basis of something I can never change. A fistfight immediately broke out after that was said. Things quickly devolved into a Jerry Springer episode with relatives alternately fighting, aghast at what was happening, and getting excited over the drama. My family refused to meet in the same house together for many years and the entire family never got back together for over a decade until somebody died.
