Almost everyone uses reference, plenty of the best advise to always get good reference,what kind of twat says you aren't an artist if you use reference

All art is in reference to something except abstract maybe. If you mean coming up with mostly original stuff? Vs art derived from other styles or memes? The best advice is to find a medium that you enjoy and have fun doing something to create form or communicate an idea, classic realism is only one kind of art, admittedly an awesome one

I think the way a lot of people come up with inspired "original" concepts is barrowing from mother nature, organic forms, insects, colors, modes of mobility etc.... Try thinking of what type of creature might exist in what kind of environment, how does it move? Is it deadly? Friendly? Goofy? Come up with some context and the idea might just make itself! Always be watching nature documentaries
