ok. if you just want to listen i actually have a personal problem i've been dealing with.

Honestly I'm not too well-versed on the subject. If you want to help me understand, I'd appreciate it. If not, that's fine. However, I will say this. I think idealism and cynicism are equally valid in their own right as long as you realize the likelihood of idealistic events taking place.

i don't think we're talking about the same idealisms, but regarding what you said, you're right, knowing that ideal events are unlikely to happen is important in having a sober mindset.

i'm not a cynical person but i don't usually expect ideal things to happen either, but i have a habit for planning for them as if they will.

i made a friend through the internet who lived in my city. we hung out a few times and were becoming really good friends, but the problem is i have a bad habit of flaking. i flaked on him once and then he cut contact with me. i know it's my fault but i'm really upset that i let this happen. idk if he will give me another chance.

i dont know what its like to have a friend youre that close with but it seems like it was more on him to make such a rash decision like that without even saying anything or asking what was up. or if he did say something and cut contact with you anyways despite you explaining it, thats kind of weird too. how long have you known this guy?

by idealism i mean the 19th century german school of thought that says that existence is dependent on categories thought, but that is just a very general expression of it. starting from Kant and then Hegel, it was very influential on 19th and 20th century european/continental thought, so where you find one you usually find the other.

i've known him since the end of 2016 but we've only hung out like 5 times. i think he might just be upset and taking a break from me or something, not sure though. we're both in the same discord so i don't think he plans on dropping me forever.

Ah, ok. I'm familiar with the names Kant and Hegel, but I honestly couldn't tell you what either of them are famous for. Would Nietzsche fit into this school of thought? I've heard him described as a nihilist numerous times, but in retrospect there seem to be some idyllic qualities in his work e.g. the Ubermensch. Excuse my ignorance, and thank you for the help.

Nietzsche doesn't really fit into a neat category/school, but a lot of people call him an existentialist.

I have a fairly basic ability to play guitar/bass guitar. I can play some fun little riffs, but I make a lot of mistakes, been meaning to get back into it. I used to rap in high school (still do a bit now) and was actually lowkey known for it in my shitty town. Mainly I like hip-hop, and certain punk/alternative sub-genres e.g. noise rock, post-punk , etc.

Some pop is decent. I hate this idea among music fans that music has to be deep and meaningful to be good. Vapid music that knows it's vapid can be pretty fucking decent. I love disco, for example. Maybe that's just my faggy side kicking in.

some pop can be actually really amazing. my favourite pop song is probably LA Hallucinations by Carly Rae Jepsen, but that was also co-written by the singer of another band I really like.

also re: meaningfulness, i think the good thing about music is that it can be structurally deep without having to rely on lyrical depth.

One thing I find interesting about music is that many people seem to seek more depth/altriusm within it than they do when it comes to other forms of art. For example, most people have no problem watching a movie that is somewhat shallow and glorifies violence, like Pulp Fiction. However, a shallow rap song that glorifies violence will be viewed with disgust by a large amount of people. I guess this is because music is viewed more as an expression of self.

that's an interesting take, i don't really know how to respond. it's hard to think about movies as being an expression of self because so many people go into making a movie, there are so many centers of personality. but with music i guess, it's centered around one group or person, so there is a specific image of who is telling the story. so if people don't like the kind of person that would tell a shallow story/sing a shallow song, then they might not be inclined to like it.

Definitely. Take 6ix9ine for example. One of the most exciting rappers to come out in years, yet he's constantly shit on for his aesthetic and the child molestor charges.
On the other side of the spectrum, look at XXX. Beat his girlfriend up, lost a few fans. But nobody really seems to give a shit anymore. Maybe because his all-around persona is just less obnoxious.

yeah it always struck me as weird how that kind of stuff could not affect one person at all, then ruin another person's whole career. just goes to show how important publicists and image consultants are
