Only use Tor on linux, preferably tails. It sounds like that when you first went to the site it injected some kind of malware onto the ipad which then someone started remotely going on other sites while you were away. That would explain coming back to it and having tabs you never searched for.

The only time I ever hear about the whole deeb web spook" or "Creepypasta" stories was when they suddenly became massive videos being recommended to me on YouTube. They got pretty popular on /b/ (but only homosexuals and children go there) and /x/ has plenty of retards/roleplayers that write fiction stories. Then it turned out there were entire subreddit a dedicated to (most-probanly) completely fabricated stories. I've never seen them on Jow Forums.
The shit related to deep-web makes no sense though. You don't just stumble upon random "creepy" stuff. There exist chatrooms dedicated to trading images and video of literal child snuff rape but it's not like 'scary'. If you don't like that stuff then it's disgusting.
You find more creepy shit just on the plain internet. Like, when you come across some profile who comments on a bunch of gymnastics photos of young girls and it turns out that the poster is actually a chuby, middle-aged guy with literally thousands of photos of himself in leotards. Any image-sharing website is bound to have multiple communities dedicated to elderly and disgusting men into shameless crossdressing and that's always fucking disgusting. That stuff bothers me more than hurtcore.
