Boss told me "Relax. Try being more social with your coworkers. Nobody here is out to get you, really." as the biggest point for improvement in my review today.
I was fired from a really high class job about 8 months ago and it kind of destroyed my life and I shut myself in my apartment since then and and became a wreck until I started working again about 6 weeks ago so I've been terrified of being fired ever since and it fucks with me. I eat lunch alone in my little cubicle, nobody talks to me, and I have no fucking idea how to talk to these people.
What the fuck do I do?
I mean for fuck's sake I was doing great at a high paying corporate job and ever since I lost it I haven't gotten any offers so I became a teacher for like 1/3 the pay. And apparently I'm "not relaxed enough" at this job or while teaching either.
Tl;dr: Boss told me to relax and be more social at work. I've had this problem my entire life.
How the hell do you do that?
Cameron Gray
bumping. sorry for being a shit. next time I'll greentext it.
Hunter Cook
Well you sound pretty well-adjusted in comparison to most people here, how old are you, why do you seek advice from extreme manchildren many of whom have never had a job
Logan Adams
I'm 23. Because I nervously eat lunch at my desk and then go home and cry about it. I can't bring myself to talk to people and yet I can't bring myself to ever leave because I'm getting money. I'm naturally extremely serious and nervous in life or something. How do you fake this?
This is my problem at every job. Nobody says anything to me and then eventually, one day, I'm just "dismissed."
Jose Gonzalez
I dunno man. My last performance review was "You saved everyone's asses by knowing how to play the system, here's 10 grand"
Joshua Evans
I miss having a real job.
Jonathan Turner
help me. how do you socialize at work? What do you do?
Jacob Anderson
Eat lunch with your co-workers.
Joshua Clark
Eat lunch with your coworkers.
Lincoln Flores
But Jow Forums told me to save money. Also they never invite me. That's partly why I did it. I was saving like $100 a month doing this I think.
Mason Howard
start off small, try talking to someone, just one person if you're comfortable with that. Then ask to hang out with them, go out for lunch, see a movie, hang out at a bar, etc.
After that, the person should ask you if you want to tag along for some social events. If you're good at cooking, invite them to your place and you could cook a meal for the two of you, or if the person is a good cook, You could cook together, That help?
Asher White
Find some common ground. If that doesn't work, just say hi when you walk by people. If that doesn't work, a simple acknowlegement is all people need.
But in the end, you are just there to work and get paid. Fuck all that other nonsense.
I guess. My conversations with people are painfully awkward but I guess. I mean I can feel myself judging everything I say to people and thinking about when to smile and all that so most conversations with me probably feel like talking to a chat robot but I can't seem to fix it.
Hunter Howard
I say "hi" to people when I walk by, or "hey." I genuinely don't get why people do this though because it's annoying as hell and I feel like I'm doing it wrong somehow every time even though it's literally just "hi."
Apparently I come across "stiff and not relaxed" when teaching though. Not sure how one fixes that.
Gabriel Anderson
If I think about how I would describe my relationship with my coworkers, it's actually pretty frightening. We meet outside of work once a month, get a couple of beers, and talk about how things are going at work, regardless of whether we still work together. We share information and work for common goals across different departments and companies, while taking out the people that get in our way, one by one. What's interesting is that there is more than one of these shadow groups out there.
Anthony Hill
you are a fucking normie fuck off shithead.
Gabriel Allen
Just say 'hey user, how was your weekend"? And then pretend to care what they have to say. If they asked you what you did, and you did jack all, lie and say you helped your brother move or some shit so it doesn't sound like you jerked off to your waifu all weekend
Ian Adams
You are there to work, not make friends. I say this not to belittle or be condescending to you, but your boss. It seems the social aspect is played more than the work aspect. I have a good work ethic but I don't socialize actively. I just do the job and leave it at that. Remember, you're there to make money, not friends. Just keep on doing what you do and don't let anyone say otherwise. If they have an issue with you not being a social butterfly, tell them what I told you just now.
Yeah this has happened to me before. Ok. Conversation usually lasts like 20 seconds and then awkwardly dies off because I was paranoid about something or got too nervous and just stopped. Then I just go back to my computer I guess. Apparently my "lack of social behavior" is evident in my teaching too. I was told to relax and not look so nervous when I teach.
Daniel Cox
That's good advice. Just remember that you don't need to overly social and force yourself to talk to other people.
Juan Cook
Cut the conversation off before it gets awkward. If you run out of ideas to talk about and they aren't saying much just be like "well I better get back at it, user. Catch up with you later".
People will open up more eventually if they see you're willing to talk. They probably think due to your behavior that you don't have interest in small chat (which is probably true) so they don't even bother.
Jose Thompson
For a decent conversation, ask them a question other than "How was your day", for example, you could ask them about their school years. If that doesn't work, then ask them if they have pets, if they do then ask them about the pets, if they dont then give some suggestions or tell them about your own (If you have any). Another conversation starter would be stuff about work (If you're allowed to talk about that stuff). The trick is to feel confident in yourself, if you can't do that then it'll be pretty hard to hold conversation.
As for teaching, you HAVE to believe what you say, or else the kids won't believe you. I've worked with children for about 7-8 years now and I'm still in college, You'll do fine.
Nathaniel Lee
I see. I thought I did a fine job teaching but apparently it's just too stiff. Also I was told I seem frantic and don't take enough control of my class. I will keep your advice in mind. Thank you.
Jack Rodriguez
You male or female? Practice small talk and social skills in general. Think about it, ponder, google.. It's important to always say hi to your coworkers when you see them for the first time in that day and if you ever engage in a conversation or if you're asked something, try not to give answers which are too short (this is very often perceived as being dismissive) and try to smile and be nice and polite about it.
Parker Russell
Just sit next to them while eating and ask how they are
Jayden Bennett
How much were you earning at that job? Was it worth the pressure (before you got fired)?
I know that feel bro. Getting fired really fucks you. I got fired only once, several years ago, and it's still on my mind, every day, all I do at work is geared towards preventing another firing. And then they have the gall to tell me to "relax"... Bitch, if I don't give it my all my performance will slip and I'll get kicked to the curb again. And I don't know if I can take it again.
