Honestly doing taxes by hand isn't that hard either. The instructions really aren't difficult (with the caveat that I don't know all the states and what kind of bullshit they include; states I've lived in have been easy completes, and I was defined as self-employed as a contractor prior to my current job).

In non-retarded countries at the start of the year you give an estimate of how much you're gonna earn and at the end of the year they calculate how much you actually earned, how much taxes you paid and if it was enough/too much.
