Moot leaving was the last nail in the coffin of the community that was Jow Forums. We used to be a tighter knit group. None of us knew each other because we were anonymous but there was still the sense of community, that we were really all on the same side. All the trolling and stupidity wasn't genuine hostility, it was us enjoying the freedom of the internet together. We laughed at ourselves, when moot got drunk and started fucking with boards, editing the rules and banning people at random it was fun. He felt kinda like the out of town friend who only showed up occasionally but when he did he brought the party with him. And even when he wasn't around the tone of the site was more geared towards levity, nonsense, and community. We used to be a group of people brought together by a common desire to be truly free to express ourselves together.

Now everything is adversarial and full of hatred, and the site is simply a boring business where nothing at all ever happens

He might not have actually been drunk, but the way I acted he may as well have been. I mean that in a good way, he would just be really funny and the stupid and fuck with the site for no reason other than to troll people, get reactions, and make everyone laugh. I seriously remember staying up till 3 or 4 am laughing my fucking add off at the stupid shit we were pulling. Everyone acting like idiots yelling at moot trying to get his attention, all the boards waiting to see where he'd pop up next. He literally once made a "party" board for a single night just for people to act like retards in, if I'm remembering correctly. Either that or he heavily edited an existing board to look ridiculous.

It's just a consequence of the internet changing and becoming more popular and more compartmentalized. Things aren't like they used to be, here or on the rest of the web. The couple years before he left moot and the rest of the staff slowly had to deal with more and more bullshit from us which led to it being much more of a job and less of a passion. I don't think moot left us, I think we abandoned him. Jow Forums and the internet changed too much. I'm just thankful he at least left the site up. We're a relic of the past at this point.

Jow Forums used to be a labor of love for Moot. This site was his baby.

For years he refused to give it up, and dedicated a lot of time and money into it, even though it was starting to get out of hand for him.

Eventually it reached a tipping point for him, and he hated what his own website had become.

We are the reason he left. Not just r9k, but other boards as well. It was too big of a shitstorm for him to reasonably deal with. He was disgusted at what Jow Forums had become. So he left.

You could see that in his embarrassing attempts to recreate Jow Forums's success with canv.as. You could see it in the some of the straight up retarded decisions he made, especially toward the end.
Overall, I kinda of think of him and Jow Forums like Lucas and Star Wars. Like, thanks for all you did at the beginning but I'm kind of glad you're not involved anymore. At least Hiro leaves shit well enough alone.
