A little chemistry lesson. Combustion is a exothermic reaction where a compound interacts with oxygen, producing H2O and carbon dioxide (CO2). The thing is, when the oxygen supply isn't enough (and other few circumstances are also met) the reaction is not complete. It's partial. Meaning that it produced CO, carbon monoxide, instead of CO2. In some conditions, the reaction is so incomplete that it emanates pure molecular Carbon, that you perceive as ashes. Now the thing is most daily combustion reactions aren't 100% complete, meaning that there will be CO in the products. You can see that by the colour of the smoke. Carbon dioxide is invisible to the naked eye. Every bit of smoke you see, either as white or grey,is actually made partially by the carbon monoxide. The darker the smoke, the higher carbon monoxide concentration. Black smoke, from burning rubber for example, is made not only from CO but from actual molecular Carbon as we talked earlier, so you can get a grip of how incomplete the combustion was.
Now the thing is, CO2 isn't breathable, but it isn't toxic either. It's the gas you output when you exhale. CO on the other hand is highly toxic. Its interaction with your blood's hemoglobin is stronger than oxygen, meaning that it competes with the oxygen for active sites to bond on the protein structure of hemoglobin. Furthermore, the binding between hemoglobin and CO is virtually irreversible. Once the four sites on a molecule of hemoglobin are occupied with CO, that molecule is basically ruined and deemed useless for our metabolism.
So you can produce CO by burning anything that will make for a thick smoke cloud and by locking all ventilation outlets. Rubber, plastic, fabric, gasoline, anything.
The classic, however, is locking yourself in the garage, running the car's engine untill the place is filled with smoke, and dieing.
