The widespread practice of adoption wasn't much of a genetic sacrifice at all. The gens were all so interbred that it was difficult to adopt someone who wasn't practically your "offspring" anyway.
Adoption was also a strategy designed to avoid the social decline your line would experience if you had TOO MANY sons and had to split up your property between them. If you were borderline Senatorial class, you were better off not marrying and adopting a cousin's son to have a single heir and keep your property together.
