Portrait was incredible, I found myself re-reading certain passages over and over because there was so much depth to them, I'll try and find one of them for you. I got a version with notes at the back, would have missed out on so many references otherwise (references local to Ireland as well as literary/religious ones). Once I'm done with this one I'm reading Dubliners next though I haven't heard the best about it apart from The Dead. Would highly recommend Portrait before you get into Ulysses, I'm saving it mself.

Houellebecq's themes are very modern and I guess reactionary, his main targets are the feminist sexual liberation types as well as aging hippies and society's obsession with youth and sexuality because of them (he calls them the '68 generation, basically boomers). He's very funny too, gets accused of being a racist, sexist, islamophobe but I really don't think he is. Start with Atomised if you're interested
