this is not Jow Forums, jimbo.

Linux users are a bunch of bullies they tell you to set yourself free then bully you for not being able to get it to work the way you want

>not being able to get it to work the way you want
either just dont use things that are too complicated or do and just dont complain and make an effort to learn it.

having an incredibly limited access of third party software is the opposite of freedom, jackass

No, they get mad at you for skipping the documentation and FAQs. Stop being such a brainlet and RTFM.

Because every problem is well documented and has clear solutions..not. imagine me as a newbie trying to fix a screen tearing issue having to trudge through ancient forum posts

are you talking about that occurs with the XFCE DE?
>linux
>freedom
actually it is
>Freedom 0: The freedom to run the program for any purpose.
>Freedom 1: The freedom to study how the program works, and change it to make it do what you wish.
>Freedom 2: The freedom to redistribute and make copies so you can help your neighbor.
>Freedom 3: The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements (and modified versions in general) to the public, so that the whole community benefits.
you cant do this with windows.

being free of consumerism and worldy desires is freedom

i use debian on mah laptop and windows on my pc
can't give up the gaymes :)

which games do you play that make this a problem?

Yeah true linux is good but 97% of the steam market is windows and Adobe products don't run on linux which is shit as well.
Maybe Wine fixes it, never tried

>windows
>freedom to install mainstream applications and have them just work the first time
>freedom not to care about your software at all
>freedom to run games optimized for your OS
I dual boot both my machines but if you're not doing software development Windows is the superior OS

depends on what you consider freedom

being locked in a single room for all your life is
also being free of consumerism and worldly desires

It's 2018, ring 0 is no longer the most privileged level of execution.
>you have no right to see what the contents of your RAM are, but Intel and the OEM have

why are you using xterm bloat join the suckless masterrace

how many hours did it take you to compile your browser?

I play comp tf2 and I can't hit the frames neccesary for good play on linux
I also play skyrim, a lot of racing games, and fortnite

the only way to achieve true freedom is through death my friends

does Jow Forums work on the suckless browser

>If it's arbitrarily tedious to use it must be good.
The state of Linuxfags.

>freedom to install mainstream applications and have them work just fine
this isnt a problem with linux though, its a problem with the people who make the programs. a good amount of times there are binaries for programs for linux that will work just fine. some cases you can even get the source code and compile from source and have them work just fine. and there are very commonly alternatives for such things.
>freedom not to care about your software at all
how is that a good thing? dont you want to know what youre actually running on your computer?
>freedom to run games optimized for your OS
this is a pretty good point though, it just depends on weighing the pros and cons of both operating systems.

also
>linux
>freedom to run your computer without rebooting it for a very long ass time and not have things fuck up whereas in windows shit will randomly break if you dont reboot often.

what
it literally takes like 3 keystrokes to make a circle
this is such an outdated and lowquality meme

which terminal emulator do you recommend instead?
>no tab support
none actually, i just downloaded the binary from the repos, the source code is still available though.
>I play comp tf2 and I can't hit the frames neccesary for good play on linux
really?
ive never really played that game before but on games with the source engine i actually get slightly better frames on linux compared to windows.

> Comp TF2
I hope it isn't UGC mate... I've some bad news for you if so.

>MUH PHOTOSHOP N MUH GAYMS

Where is a good place for a n00b to learn how to install a barebones os? I've tried tackling gentoo but couldn't get X to work so I had no desktop.

archlinux wiki

I used to play ugc but now I usually play mixes what happened
also alot of the competitive binaries we have are windows only iirc

Photoshop/Wine and Gayms are the reason people still use Linux in 2018.
2019 will be the year of the GNU desktop, using the HURD kernel.

>actually falling for the gentoo meme

did you try reading log files and did you download all the packages you need to make it work with your own system?
also please tell me you know to type 'startx' to start the x server.

fight me faggot
really though gentoo is actually a great learning experience and it is very customisable.

>this isnt a problem with linux though, its a problem with the people who make the programs
who cares about the source of the problem? what's important is that it's my problem as an user, should I decide to use Linux.

>dont you want to know what youre actually running on your computer?
the thing is, most people don't care - and shouldn't care. Are you an expert of the inner workings of your car?

>in windows shit will randomly break if you dont reboot often
nice nineties-era meme you got there

>GNU desktop
top kek. I'm an oldfag and I keep hearing that every year for the last 20 years or so.

>he's not using esr
why do you harm yourself?

>the thing is, most people don't care
this is true, you can choose to not care if you want, im not gonna stop you.
>and shouldnt care
this is only your opinion though. personally i think most people should care.

>I get beat up after class
Rmaolft

i like the shape of the tabs better on this

Idk about the logs and unsure about the packages I tried following the docs as close as I could with bare minimum flags to see if it would work. Basically finished the installation and booted into a black command line and startx is not found for some reason. Then I gave up and did an autoinstall of a different os

This. Install gentoo, literally the only good OS out there. Stable as rocks, fast as gentoo penguins, has all the packages ever. Checkout cloveros for the Jow Forums-approved (tm) gentoo distro.

>Basically finished the installation and booted into a black command line
well this is called the Command Line Interface, but unless you configure the x server to run when you boot up your computer it will boot into the CLI by default
>startx is not found for some reason.
it seems like you didnt install the xorg or xinit packages from the repos.

That's not "not getting X to work", that's being so dumb you didn't even install X and then complained the computer didn't grow a brain scanner to detect your intent.

Plus they did not fall for the Lenny "you just hate handicapped people" Poetter-memes.

UGC got outed for having corrupt mods and shit.
They booted a bunch of 'em off on the downlow but their reps already so damaged they had to pair with Valve for their notoriously bad paid comp mode.

Until they jail you because your OS reported to the government the posts you made on Jow Forums and being incel is illegal.

Holy shit what is this guy trying to say?

yeah, that's what that guy was talking about

Fuck you I followed the install guide step by step and didn't skip anything there are just some parts where you need to understand what you're doing and obviously I didnt asshole

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

It is, actually. I've only run into one problem that wasn't easily googable, and it had to do with a brand new kernel feature that hardly anyone uses directly.

The problem is you never spent the 3 hours required to not be a total illiterate (in the linux world) dumbass.

>tfw QubesOS

Uhm o-ok desu?

Attached: SmolBabby.png (1366x768, 732K)

this guy is correct though,
you have to specifically type a command to install the xorg server which is not covered in the gentoo install guide. you actually have to be able to have some amount of knowledge to get shit to work with linux, expecially with gentoo, one of the most complicated(but also most customisable) linux distros.
run this as root on gentoo
>emerge -a x11-base/xorg-server
it isnt covered in the gentoo handbook and doesnt come preinstalled when you complete all the steps with the handbook

what is that protonmail icon? just a link to the site?

>over the age of 14
>still playing games
LOL

>battlefield 1 isn't triple a

You didn't run into problems, but, well, I did, dumbass. Sorry I don't know how to customize the entire system and pinpoint the probem in my specific machine in 3 hours.

You're wrong desu see pic

theres replicant themes for that
jej good thing we have faceit now

guys i need help i was told sudo apt install girlfriend would install a girlfriend buts its saying the package cannot be found. do i have to compile it from source or something

Nah it is the protonmail bridge. Lets you read your mail in thunderbird. But it's only available on windows, or linux via request to the beta if you email [email protected] nicely and ask for an invite (if you are a paid customer.)

Attached: ProtonmailBridge.png (765x494, 30K)

>it said package not found
im pretty sure its actually supposed to say something about a compatibility error with your current system

guess I'll keep using it in browser for now

what system do i need to install then?

ChadOS

i googled and cant find anything wtf is this

well its incompatible with your current hardware

who here using /lolifox/? Best browser desu.

Attached: lolifox.png (1366x768, 66K)

fuck you youre incompatible with your current hardware

I've been using linux for over a decade. I don't run into problems like that because I'm not mentally deficient.

How is screentearing my fault

Because screentearing hasn't been a thing in more than a decade unless you went out of your way to be stupid about it.

You either A: installed it on unsupported hardware or B: don't understand to graphics stack enough to google how to enable sync in your driver.

Not this guy but why isn't sync enabled by default? Who sat there and thought "man I sure love tearing".

Because there is no "default" across all linux for all configs. I never had tearing. But he does, so he should check that.

Yeah it's on an old laptop. Not gonna pretend like I know how to fix it

>Not gonna pretend like I know how to fix it
Then I won't pretend you do, either.

Bro
Guess what
>Works on my machine

but you know. Remove the bullshit and install a normal OS.

It's not that hard to fix. He's just too lazy to google it. It's almost always similar to how you would fix it on linux.
>open graphical menu for drives
>enable it
Wow, just like vsync on windows.

graphics driver* not drives

Thing is, if he installed a normal OS he wouldn't even need to google anything because it would simply work.
Why are the linuxfags so deluded? Yeah, it's really cool that a poweruser or a software developer can get by if willing to spend some time on learning internals and then googling up solutions to bizzare problems every now and then. It isn't what the proper desktop OS experience should be, though.

It still functions just with a minor problem. I've googled it and obviously tried mess with settings thru clicking menus and buttons the tricky part is having to go under the hood and see why it is messed up

What a non roastie thread that got 90+ replies?
Ive tried using linux before btw.
It was a pain in the ass.
I actually needed to use the command prompt to install programs and had non compatible drivers.
Not to mention no gaems.
Its like i was spending all my time doing things i shouldnt be have to be wasting my time on.
