Nope. First off, what Bernie promotes isn't socialism, it's social democracy (the idea that the government should provide services like healthcare, pay for a basic college education, etc.). Secondly, all socialism is is the idea that workers should own the means of production, and centrally-planned economies a la the USSR are hardly the only way to do that. There's also replacing the top-down corporate structure with worker-owned businesses (i.e. market socialism). In neither case is it about making everyone absolutely equal.

Kerala is the only state in India governed by the country's Communist Party and it has the country's highest life expectancy, literacy rate, and HDI score. And while Tito was a dictator, Yugoslavia also did pretty well up until the West used the 1973 oil crisis to strongarm it into immediately paying off all its debt (something which couldn't happen to America because it'd crash the entire world economy, making it pointless).
