You know what's odd? I think that a lot of internet things are popular by accident. Because normies can't parse the statistics of a trend, so when a meme/trend has millions of followers/likes they assume it's regular people doing it and so just follow the trend even if it makes no sense to them.
They pick up and copy trends completely wholesale. There are like certain nerd/geek things that shouldn't be popular but because people are so desperate to follow trends, they accidentally popularize it.
