Got no clue I only heard of it when the Fappening happened, checked out pics on /b/ then forgot of the place it looked like an old fucked up site to me from 1998 or something.
Then Trump came with his bs, then I read the Jow Forums for a while then again I forgot about it again.
I've been actively posting for like a few months only. The place didn't change much since the Fappening imo.

On that matter, the best conversation on politic, social mores and the topic were always on /a/ thanks to mods who actuallly gave a shit.

They're actually malware-delivering ads so if you're using any adblock method beside ublock origin and its descendants/ascendants, the ads will be at the bottom, but will be invisible for a few seconds when you scroll there. The reason for that is that the point is not to load the ads, but to load the malware delivery code. The ads are there to hide the fact it's malicious and more than just serving ads. Moreover, if you try to block the ads by other means than ubo (etc.), all the site's css is broken, AND threads, the catalog and thread listings automatically break.
