As far as a single player FPS, It's hard to think one that is more influential. DOOM is probably the only one that surpasses it, with a possible nod to Halo: Combat Evolved

unironically garry's mod played it as a kid and still some even when i graduated
i don't play it anymore but it was 10$ and i milked roughly 4000 hrs of gameplay out of it. that's $.01 for 4 hours of gameplay.

i got really autistic and in-depth about the lore. that's pretty much the only reason i like it. it was a VERY good game for the time it was released, but now maybe not so much. you have to keep in mind 2006 standards when playing it.

Dark souls 1. It's the perfect metaphor for being a robot. You start life with jack shit, and basically grind your way to being a fucking legend. Yet none of it fucking matters because you have no friends, only enemies and allies, while everytime you get somewhere, the entire charade resets. The Chad and Stacy gods screwed you over, and now you got pulled into Lordran instead of leading a happy life in the world outside.

Arma 2, SWAT 4, Postal 2, STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl, SCMRPG. That was easy, Half Life 2 is a good game, but it's by no means the best game ever made.

Any of the SoulsBorne games, really. Bonus points to Bloodborne because you're in a literal nightmare of a life.
Also insight showing that the more you suffer onward the more you see the world for what it really is.
