Why barbell back squat when single leg squat is superior in every way?
>more accurately simulates real life conditions, you walk/run one leg at a time >translates better to athletic performance through better strengthening and balancing single leg movements >works out muscle imbalances that can ruin bilateral squat mechanics by working each leg individually >more beginner friendly than any weighted bilateral squat variation, can be progressed easily with a box >never requires a rack or gym membership >can be easily performed at home >much more spine friendly, you never have to load dangerous amounts of weight to build massive legs as you need only a fraction of the weight to equal a heavy barbell back squat >a 200lb adult male needs only 115lbs of external resistance to equal a 3plate barbell back squat assuming 185lbs effective body weight >practically impossible to injure yourself doing >shoulder friendly >don't have to convince yourself that the gashes you develop on your back from the barbell are "manly"
Barbell back squat is an ego lift. There's no benefit to it outside of competitive lifting.

Jumping and one legged squats are the best safest low body exercise it is true. Much more athletic to do atg one leg squat than heavy (((powerlifting))) squat

Mmmm hmm mmmm hmmm yeah I get what youre saying but how much do you actually squat?
because any progression you pick with bodyweight is going to have huge jumps and a defined max without adding weight. it's just not as practical compared to 5 pound increments basically forever.
what i'd like to do is give pistol squats a try once I hit bw on bb squat. it'll improve mobility, flexibility and balance even if it does nothing for strength.
John Morris
I've just started adding weight to my pistols gradually. When I started out I used counter weights and then reduced the weight, like all those bodyweight progression programs suggest. Then I started adding weight back on but kept it more centered. Like, holding a dumbbell goblet style for example. Now I'm up to two 15 pound dumbbells (only 3x3 though, I just got back from a trip and I couldn't work out so I am taking it slow right now).

Stopped reading after your first sentence. I fucking love single leg squats far more than barbell squats, but SLS's don't build your core the same way barbell squats can.
Blake Collins
what do you mean by "core"? do you mean the entire core musculature or just some part of it because squats do not effectively build the whole core particularly the abs. single leg squats do effectively build part of the core musculature primarily the lumbar erectors and are an effective lumbar erector exercise. by far and away the primary benefit of squats is in building the quads. everything else can and should be replaced by a superior exercise.
Joseph Watson
We're not talking calisthenics only here. The fact is you need only a fraction as much weight in a single leg squat to equal a barbell back squat because you have your own bodyweight as free resistance which for most people is somewhere around 150-200lbs. And secondly every pound of weight you add is effectively doubled as you're only using a single leg to move it which means your spine gets loaded up less, less strain on your shoulders, can be performed without a rack, etc, etc, etc.

pistol squats do literally nothing. the only taxing part of them is balancing, which is less effective at strengthening abs then stabilising 400+lb by far
if you developed any leg size or strength from them you would have been able to post your leg, but you couldnt

tl;dr version - "i'm a little bitch with little bitch legs who can't squat for shit and all my other lifts are shit as well"
>Barbell back squat is an ego lift. There's no benefit to it outside of competitive lifting.
a scientific statement if I ever saw one lads.

Single-leg squats fuck your knees up. And I mean actually fuck your knees up, not the "don't squat so low it's bad for your knees!" broscience that DYELs peddle at the gym. Pistol squats are a fun way to test your strength and coordination, sort of like one-armed pushups, but much like one-arm pushups they are terrible for real training.
>>more accurately simulates real life conditions, you walk/run one leg at a time Not true at all. In real life you don't squat on one foot, you squat on both feet. And when running, you transition fluidly from one foot to the other; you never have to balance on one leg.
>more beginner friendly than any weighted bilateral squat variation, can be progressed easily with a box They're not more beginner friendly at all. Maintaining decent form on pistols is hard as fuck, and you're more likely to do some kind of bullshit cheating to complete your rep. Conversely, anyone can learn proper barbell squat form in a couple of sessions.
>practically impossible to injure yourself doing Wrong. As I previously mentioned, you're more likely to injure your knees. If you don't believe me, then go practice doing each variant of squat and see how your knees feel after each set.
>don't have to convince yourself that the gashes you develop on your back from the barbell are "manly" What the fuck are you talking about? How do you get "gashes" on your back from doing squats? Are you retarded?
