>History. I want to know what makes a Russia.
What year are you on?
no
yes
I'm in the late 1700s. The book will go forward chronologically while handling different subjects. I just finished up Peter's achievements and his successors, I have moved on to what happened to social classes in the Petrine era.
no
Cool
Who is this Peter and what are his achievements?
yes

Peter I and Peter the great, he was fascinated with western Europe and wanted to make Russia into an empire. He spent a lot of time in emissaries, learning about places like the Netherlands and Germany and making connections there. He succeeded in taking land from the Ottoman Empire, making a stronger navy, and establishing universities with the cultural and economic revisions he made. The book says he's still widely admired today
STOP READING
best king, he was also like 7 feet tall
Yeah the book says he was a huge man
But I don't know anything about Russia and it's making me feel stupid
Sounds like a great dude. Did he die of old age or something?

Well I said earlier I'm trying to learn about social structures. There was nobility at the top, merchant classes (very broad term, it included artisans) in the middle, and several sorts of peasants at the bottom. What distinguished the "type" of peasant was mostly who they belonged to. In the Petrine era, if you wanted to rise to nobility, you had a small chance of getting there on merit by enrolling in a military academy and dedicating the larger part of your life to military service. This usually required a lot of money in the first place though.
stop reading
I don't want to
Tell you what how about I shove a glass bottle down your throat and punch your throat while the bottle still in there.
Cool
tell me more about this military academy?
Well Peter the Great wanted to make Russia more like Western Europe and Russia was lagging behind in education and science, so he established a lot of military academies under direct control of the state. If you advanced far enough you could gain noble status during your time in the university, but you also had to have enough money to buy a second household. You also had to dedicate the rest of your life to military service. This helped Russia to get up to date with science, math, and technology that the rest of Europe was innovating.
I'm sorry, I have this confused. Military academy, not military university, although a lot of universities were under control of the state as well. It was in these military academies where you trained for service that you could climb social ladders.
Sounds great
Working your ass off to achieve your goals.
So when does religion come into play?
I sure that a big part in Russia's history.
MODS = GODS
Go right ahead, bro.
I've only read very little about religion since I'm more interested in how Russia became what it is today, but I did read about how Peter changed the Russian Orthodox church in his attempts to westernize. He stopped Palm Sunday, criticized church corruption, and replaced the Patriachate with a council of hierarchs.
*Patriarchate*
Sweet
Who came after peter?
One last gay post before bed.
All qt bois are to report to the gay thread tomorrow I'll be there to molest you :3
Go to bed
Catherine I, she was his second wife and took power after Peter II died a few months after taking the throne.
>Catherine I
What are her achievements?
please delete the gayposters
She didn't do as much as Peter and was mostly a puppet of the noble Menshikov. She undid some of Peter's reforms (which were excessive and a huge cultural shock no matter how beneficial they were) by reducing the army's size, shortening military service from lifetime to 25 years, and withdrawing the army from provinces. This at least kept Russia from going into debt.
>noble Menshikov
O shit
What's he deal?
He was a noble of obscure origins who worked his way up to high status through tireless military service. After Peter the Great's death, he lead the coup that put Peter II in "power" and led the Supreme Privy Council (the real group in charge) when Catherine inherited the throne. The book doesn't say much, but he seems to be ruthlessly ambitious and very energetic.
cool
Is anything on stepan razin?
No, I started with the beginning of Peter's reign because he kicked Russia into the modern era. I haven't heard of Stepan Razin, but when I looked him up, he lived to early for the part of Russia's history I'm interested in.
There's song about him and it's one of my favorite opera music . He must be a big part in Russia's history.
NOOOOO
