A city in Australia with super high unemployment. Actually, I was at a dinner with my parents and some family friends recently, and the kids of that family (in their mid twenties) were lamenting how hard it is to find work as well. One of them said "there's absolutely nothing in this city" and it seemed to roll straight off the boomers' backs.

There are waiting lists for volunteer work here. Going through volunteer agencies to even do shit nobody wants to do like work unpaid at nursing homes takes months. It's great.

Even having experience means you're fucked. Retail and service jobs like stacking shelves and manning cash registers often ask for 6+ months of experience, though they like 2+ years.

Everyone gets their jobs from friends and family where I live. Both of my siblings got their first paid jobs because my parents knew people, but my parents have never extended that courtesy to me and insist that my siblings got their jobs through effort alone and not nepotism.

It was painful standing 12 hours a day but just when it started to not feel as bad, then they canceled my assignment. I worked 4 days, but the assignment was supposed to last 3 months. The factory was full of Mexicans except for like 2 other white dudes. I was the only white dude without tats.

I think it's a mixture of both. They don't want to ruin their livelihoods/reputation by getting me involved in things, but they also genuinely, 100% believe that my siblings got as far as they did without any "real" help. What's funny is they'll point to extended family as examples of self-made young people, but when you actually ask them how they got to where they are it's always the same answer of "lol someone in my family got me a job doing construction/IT/management and now I am set" you know?

Actually, getting entry level jobs is more difficult than getting post secondary education jobs, so, seeing as to how most in the USA have at least 50 grand per year, twenty dollars is a little lower than average pay for second ed grads historically.

Of which is why they say min wage in murika ought to be fifteen per hour, as it's currently inhumane with how low hours one gets, and how low pay, with grueling work often. You can't live an American lifestyle with an entry level job, an actual entry is not worth having.
