Okay Jow Forums, help me on this, cause I am a little bit autistic. How do start going into the gym? Im used to meticulously plan every detail in my endeavors, but Im completely clueless at what will transpire when i'll first come into the gym. Do i have to talk to some kind of receptionist to buy a pass? Then what? Just go there and lift weights? What about trainer? Will i have to find him there or will he approach me first? Oh, and i will need a spotter, right? Cause i don't wanna kill myself with a barbell. But how do i find one? Just come up to random person and ask them to spot me? God damn it, why is it so fucking complicated, im already discouraged from going there just by typing all of this out.

Youre pretty shit at meticulous planning being on this website. Was make a thread on Jow Forums between 8:30-9:00 on your schedule?

Just go to the gym with an acquaintance

>Was make a thread on Jow Forums between 8:30-9:00 on your schedule?
I am at work and have nothing better to do anyway.
>Just go to the gym with an acquaintance
But i don't have any acquaintances who goes to gym. And even if i convince one, isn't it kinda gay to go to gym with your friend?

Come on, does no one in Jow Forums actually goes to the gym? I just want to hear what exactly were you doing at the first day when you decided to go there.

for the typical commercial gym

>walk in
>ask to sign up
>they show you around
>they sign you up and give your card for check in
>you can now walk in any time they're open and start using equipment as long as it looks like nobody else is using it (but plenty of retards don't rerack weights or claim equipment even when they've been in another room for a half hour and walk back in, so you will have to deal with dumb normies occasionally)
>it's the wild west. nobody responsible is watching anybody do shit, 30 year old boomers are hitting the ineffective meme exercises on the machines and young men are doing ego lifts with terrible form. women are on treadmills because fuck running outside since that's free and only poor people like superior, free things

so it is up to you, the enlightened gymcel, to get your lifts in amongst this mess at a commercial gym. but it's not really that hard unless you pick a super busy gym. as for the spotter question, read the sticky and then SS or SL (which are linked in the sticky) and all will become clear faget

Low quality bait

Is that so hard for you to believe that some people here never actually went to the gym in their whole life and need an advice?

>isn't it kinda gay to go to gym with your friend?
why else do you think people go to a gym
fucking hetero

personal trainers are a meme, absolutely do not pay some DYEL to give you bro-advice. and try to get month to month if you can, contracts are cancer

>go in
>go to reception
>tell them you want to sign up
>they usually give you a tour or even let you train for free one time to make up your mind
>sign basic contract for a year or so
>depending on the quality of the gym they just fuck off and let you do whatever you want or assign you a trainer to help you, especially since you are dyel mode
>you should have a routine prepared or at least a general idea what to do
>you usually only ask people around you to spot you while benchpressing, but you don't really need that during your first workouts

And now a few things to remember: Nobody gives a shit about you. Most of the people there have been going to the gym multiple times a week for years. They have seen fatter people, weaker people, uglier people than you. It's just another day of the same for them and all of them walked into a gym for the first more or less like you.
Try to wear appropriate clothing. What people will stare at is some kid in jeans and flip flops.
And most importantly, don't try to lift too much to look stronger. You could injure yourself and everybody can see how much you struggle.
Focus on doing the exercises correctly, you will be barely able to move from DOMS anyway the next day.
If you have any questions you can always ask the people around for pointers, the vast majority of people are happy to help you and have nothing to do between sets anyway

A very helpful answer, thank you.
>And most importantly, don't try to lift too much
How do i pick my starting weights correctly?

Start at the bare minimum, benchpress only the bar for example. Go up in small steps while maintaining correct form until you feel like you can't lift any more

you'll get a feel for it, know how many reps you're going for, 8 is a good number, start with just the bar or some light dumbells (5-10lbs depending on the exercise) and give the exercise a go, if it feels easy, up the weight, and do a few more reps, when you get a to a weight where you think you can do 8-12 reps but not too many more then you're probably at a good weight, if you get to a weight where you can't quite do 8, or struggle to do the last one (your form gets bad or something) then lower the weight a bit.
Do you have a routine in mind? If so, what is it? If not, what are your goals and what is your current body like?

Wow, it's actually sounds a lot easier than i've imagined it so far
>Do you have a routine in mind? If so, what is it?
No, not yet. But I am going to read Starting Strength and see where it will get me.
>what are your goals and what is your current body like?
Im 70kg skinny-fat with twig arms and huge belly.

Friends are usually shitty at helping you start at the gym. I went a bunch of times with friends and it never stuck. Seeing as you have no gymbros that shouldn't be a problem.
What I did was I just got a personal trainer to get me a base. We jived well and he kicked my ass and would whip me about form all the time but also constantly switched it up.
Once you know good form you don't really forget what it feels like and you can record yourself/use the mirrors to make sure you're doing it right as well. So that is my recommendation, get yourself a PT who you get along with and actually gives a shit and then once you have your base go from there.

i dont know what to tell you op

when i enter the gym, i feel like i am alone

i dont give a fuck about anyone

all I see is weight and myself in the mirror

I dont know why people like you need to make this so much more complicated

>He's concerned people will think he's gay for bringing a friend to the gym
Max autismo detected

SS is good if you actually understand the routine, just be aware that squats and deadlifts can be tricky to learn on your own, if there is somewhere there who looks like they know what they're doing with deadlifts or squats, you could try asking them to give you some pointers, or if they could check on your form
watch the starting strength videos with mark's form instructions, people meme about SS and rippletits, but his form videos are very easy to follow and he knows how to explain things for beginners.

Realize that unless you're making noise or in people's way no one gives a shit about what you're doing. That's number one.

Just ask at the front desk. They're trained to sell you shit. They want you to pay for a membership. Your thinking you fucked up while everyone else gives no shits is the worst that's going to happen

Also I just read the rest of your post and you're a bit more autistic than I thought. Yeah, just walk in, there will be a receptionist, tell them you'd like a tour and to sign up (or skip the tour, whatevs). They'll probably give you some payment structures i.e. month to month or yearly commitment etc. After that they will probably try to sell you PT sessions, will ask you what your goals are, stuff like that. Just let them know you're new to all this and explain your goals. If you get the PT they'll set up an appointment for you with them (date&time) and then just show up and let the receptionist know you're looking for so-and-so (after you meet them you can just track them down yourself in the gym, or ask reception, whatever triggers your autism less) and enjoy the workout. If you don't jive with a certain PT then just ask to try someone else out, its your money.

OP do you have money to spend?

Because I'm just starting out and you might be able to do what I'm doing.

I found a tiny gym that is almost entirely devoted to weight lifting. Everyone in there is the real deal.

I have a trainer teaching me everything, and watching me the entire time. He really knows his shit and I couldn't imagine starting weight training without his constant critiques and guidance.

A lot of people shit on the idea of a trainer, but if you can find one that isn't just some bro-science dipshit you get a nice headstart on things.

It IS expensive though. I'm paying 50 a session.
