So I think my gf had a come-to-Jesus moment today, realizing that at 5'3" she weighs just over 200 lbs, while I weigh only 195 at 6'0". She seems to be concerned enough to want to do something, so I'm going to help her with her diet and exercise and take a firmer approach than I had been, since I think at this point she won't think I'm just being mean now that she's actually seen the "2" on the scale (she was about 185 when we started dating so it's not like I watched her fall off the horse over a long period, and she really doesn't look very heavy which I suppose is my own fault for not noticing more).
We are going to visit our families in a month, and I'd like to bring her back 10-20 lbs lighter so she can see the positive response from her folks. So, a few questions:
1) Is 20 lbs attainable in a month? I've literally never had to lose weight before so I have no idea. I looked it up online and it seems so, but I don't just want the canned "doctor" answer, I'd like some real life experience if possible. 2) Is it too much to ask of a beginner to do ~5 days a week of weights and/or cardio? 2-a-days aren't a big deal for me, would it be too much to ask that she walk the dog for 30 min or jog for 30 min in the morning, then work out with me for an hour in the evening? 3) If we make solid improvements to her diet and exercise, would it make sense to put her on a thermogenic for just this month so she can get a "head start" or does it have a negative effect on her metabolism once she goes off it?
These seem like newbie questions to me, but I've known how to get results for myself for years, and never have struggled with diet or exercise. But I've never had to help someone else, especially someone who has literally never exercised outside of high school volleyball. I'm going to put her on basically an easier version of my routine, but I was hoping maybe someone would have some experience with helping a female lose weight.
I'm in a very similar situation to you. My girl got to about 198 at 5'3 and was beginning to get really depressed. I've found that being overweight, especially if you're a young person can be extremely detrimental to almost every aspect of your life.
Only thing I can tell you is that my gf lost about 24 pounds (she's now 175ish) between early February and today. The key part of her weight loss was DIET. A lot of girls who are fat consume WAAAAAAAY too much sugar -- I'm talking over 100 grams of sugar a day. Try requesting that she maintain a paleo diet and limit her sugar consumption to under 30 g a day, and her carbs to under 100 g a day. Then, get her in the gym at least twice a week for some light cardio and weight lifting.
I don't think 20 lbs is obtainable in a month for a woman of her height. A much better goal would be about 6 to 8 pounds in a month. Try aiming for 20 pounds of weight loss by the end of Summer (late August).
Weight loss is primarily DIET. I'd say 80% diet / 20% activity level.
Just some more tips that worked for me:
Eat meals together to help reinforce each others diets. Allow cheat meals twice a week. Snack rarely. Get used to entering meals hungry and leaving them satisfied, but never stuffed. Snack on almonds, spiced chickpeas, carrots and hummus, occasional no-sugar added peanut butter spoon-fulls, and bits of dark chocolate bars. These things are amazingly good at suppressing your appetite for hours and are very low sugar.

Losing weight is VERY simple. Espescially for a fat person.
All you have to do is eat less, eat less often, and eat better.
Eat less means eat fewer calories and less calorie dense foods.
Eat less often means eat at designated times only. Breakfast, lunch, supper Or just lunch and supper Or just supper.
IF and Omad are a thing for a reason. They work. I dropped nearly 100 pounds in a year and kept it off for three with what I learned during that time.
There is NOTHING wrong with going hungry for a day or two as long as you keep hydrated and don't have any really bad medical issues.
As for eating better. You simply have to eat homecooked, or self prepared organic whole veg, fruit, nuts, berries and grassfed meats and animal byproducts.
If you can't get organic or grassfed then simply eating homecookd veg fruit mets etc etc will work.
Also, people tend to be ignorant of the fact that they drink a lot of calories. To your body, that "zero calorie" diet soda is a small meal. That frappuccino from the coffee dump? That shit is 1k calories at least. That will DESTROY a woman's calorie allowance for an entire day. See all liquids that aren't water, teas(green not juice that's called tea)and black coffee will be seen by your body as a snack or full meal.
Last but not least. You don't need a gym or some fancy ass workout routine to lose weight. You need to just sit and lay down as little as possible and go for 30 minute - 1hour a day walks every single day. Period.

20 lbs in a month is an unrealistic goal. Granted there are many variables including age, height, sex, and starting weight, but general rule of thumb is about 2.5 lbs per week.
10-12 pounds in a month is a much more reasonable goal.

It's easy for you and me, I have zero problem increasing activity level or changing my diet. But I think she's got some sort of attachment or addiction to food. My aunt is severely obese and I asked the same question of why she doesn't simply eat less and move more. Apparently some trauma in her childhood made her seek comfort in food, which is extremely common in abused individuals if you have ever watched TV.

Does she gulp down her food and is she still hungry after finishing her plate? Then she should remain calm when eating and should count her chewing. That's a thing I forgot to mention. She doesn't even seem to eat that much. For example, tonight we had salmon and rice; her choice, not mine. She ate a normal size portion. This chick sounds like me, similar height, and I was about 230 at my heaviest. I suggest she download myfitnesspal on her phone and start tracking her calories. Don't worry about Marcos right now, just have her track what she's currently eating to get an idea of what her diet is like, how much sugar, carbs, calories etc. Just for a few days of her "normal" eating habits, then switch it to have her goal be 1200-1300 kcal. She'll start reading labels and making better decisions on her own. It's best that you don't just tell her what to eat and when, but let her learn on her own. It's the only way to enforce real lifestyle changes and promote actual nutritional knowledge. As for exercise, as long as she's moving and doing something She'll stick with, it's all good, but since we're on Jow Forums I suggest she lifts, She'll look better once the weight is off if she does. My random advice is not to gun for rapid loss. Most people can't do it, and even if they can, will hate it the entire time and learn nothing except how bad food made them feel good. She will probably relapse the moment any other stress enters her life.
A loss of 1-2 per week is sustainable and comfortable. At these rates, she just needs to eat clean and healthy, and can snack a bit. The lifestyle change will be much better for her in the long run. For 15 pounds, budget ten weeks. If she's looking to get herself down to a normal weight for her height, allow an entire year.

You get less sugary versions of the coffee drinks to wean off. You don't get a whole creamy frappucino with syrup and whipped cream, that clocks in at over 500 calories. You stop ordering larges and you get smalls. You get your order with skim milk and you use stevia. You get the tall cold brew vanilla which is 100 calories, add a stevia or two if it's too bitter. You switch to buying refreshers, or shaken unsweet teas with half lemonades. All these options are around the 100 calorie mark.
The ideal is to get off of it completely but there is SO much wiggle room at starbucks to get something that still tastes good. I'm not as short as your girlfriend but I'm another basic white girl who loves her starbucks and I had to decide that I loved losing weight more. So I went less and when I did go, I experimented to find lower calorie alternatives.
Also, theres some decent advice in this thread and I want to say that 16/8 IF is what really helped me lose weight. You can essentially still eat like a fatty with IF.

Sex provides a proxy for dopamine-dependent short-term stress relief that burns calories instead of consuming them.
