/run/

I started running at my gym and I am having issues with getting over a 1.5miles without hurting and stopping.
Around a mile my calves start cramping and my back starts to hurt a little... I fixed my back a little bit by starting planks, I imagine it will get better with more time.
But how do I fix my calves? Is it something like my quads on a bike and just keep going through the pain until they loosen up or?

Also what type of music do runners listen to? The music I have for biking doesnt seem to fit and doesnt work for the rhythm I need and the shit at the gym is terrible.

Is it normal/sustainable to have my heart rate in the 180's for 10+ minutes? I am hoping to get to 5 miles/40minute ish with no breaks by end of summer.

Also whats your best mile?

When i run for speed i dont listen to anything i find music distracts me from performing. Distance running like 10 clicks plus i listen to old school parkway drive or drum and bass.

Lower back should come good with time try stretching your calves after each run and mke sure your form is good theres plenty of vids on youtube aboit heal/toe strike running forms.

I listen to dark synthwave on my nightruns in the city and imagine I'm a cyborg agent in a dystopia

Don't judge me nigga you wouldn't be here if you didn't have a bit of the 'tism yourself

nice music, I see how it differs from the music I typically listen to while out biking, slower beats so I probably wouldnt overexert myself as quickly, whereas with cycling I typically can rest while riding a bit here and there and only really do 5-10minute bursts with a minute or so slow downs... this might be why I keep pressing on until my heart rate hits 180 for a few minutes while running and I sustain at 150-160 while on the bike for 2 hours.

That's really good music, got more? Have some Alice in return.

Can you please stop saying 'tism. It bothers me.

Any recommendations for shoes? As a mildly (former) complete obese fuck I have been doing the elliptical but want to change things up and jog around my area/treadmill.

Do you really need running shoes or can I keep using my gym tennis shoes? Don't want to fugg up my knees any worse but want to start doing 5ks and fix my blood pressure even more.

Any ultra runners around? Gonna run my first 110km in a little more than a month. Only ran a marathon so far, so how fucked am I and any good secret advices? Any tips on coping with a night start (00:00)? Should I fuck with my sleep schedule beforehand? The track follows a river on a bicycle path, so it should be 'easy' compared to other ultras of the same length.

Definitely get running shoes. There aren't any bad brands , just go into a dedicated sports/running store and let the people there help you. If you have more experience you can decide for yourself, but it's ususally not worth it on your first pair.

the inside of my knee hurts after 5km, what type of stretches do i need

also, anyone got experience running with weights? i tried with 15kg backpack, its was rather nice

To all of you who /run/

Technique is way more important than you may think. That's why you get cramps and fuk up your knees. I strongly recomend running in a track, not in roads or treadmills, the "padding" it has is for something dude, also at the athletism track there are people who might help you with some easy running technique exercises which you could use as a warmup.

t. Sports Science grad student AND former amateur sprinter. (I was really bad but never got injuried bc of technique)

If you train technique, in a propper enviroment while doing sum powerliftin' why don't you run properly?

Where does it hurt exactly? Not all pain can be countered with stretching. Maybe your stride and/or shoes are shit. Try running on a soft surface.
Running with weights is a bad meme, don't do it. Especially not if you are a beginner and your knees hurt.

>runs with weights
>has knee issues now

Hmmmmm

that right there is why so many former military people have fucked up knees and backs

probably going to feel chilly at 1st, is it next to a stream or water? gonna be colder if it is and then this time of year the bugs are gonna be crazy once the sun is up. I run into this a lot on my bike and yesterday my arms and face looked like the mosquito apocalypse

It follows a rivers, so I'm not too worried with the insects, but good advice. I guess it will cool down the air a little, but I don't expect to get any kind of snprotection from trees. Could get really nasty.

Okay, maybe stupid question from a runnerfag.

Before todays run, I took a shit and then weighted myself. Then I went running, I finished my 8 km run and then weighted myself again and now I have a 1,2 kg less than before running. I didn't have any other "output" (no shitting, pissing) and I weighted immediately after running with the same clothes etc.

How is that possible? Do really people lose that much weight through sweating? Or is my weight meter malfunctioning?

next to water is where all the bugs are and cold air is trapped in the mornings... thats when and where I go for my longer bike rides... thats why I bring up bugs, a good mosquito repellent might be in order.

water weight. I once lost 9 lbs in 6.5 hours while eating and drinking on a 100 mile ride I also had 2 beers before I weighed myself.... felt like shit afterward.

normal enough

I jogged for 50 minutes straight and I think it was about 7km. I don't really know how bad that is time-wise but I also don't really have any kind of goal in mind though I guess would like to challenge myself. What can I do to improve? Should I try to run faster or increase the distance I run for now?

3:56 miler here

No music unless i'm grinding out easy miles on the treadmill. It just distracts you otherwise

>water weight. I once lost 9 lbs in 6.5 hours while eating and drinking on a 100 mile ride I also had 2 beers before I weighed myself.... felt like shit afterward.
>normal enough

Thank you for your answer user. Have a nice day

6km should be done within less than 30 minutes, so you are a failure.

So should I try upping my running speed next time then?

No, get slower obviously.

Run slower. 6:30 is not bad but my bet is you are trying to keep a similar pace every time you run.
Try a 3+ miler at 9:00-10:00 pace and see how that feels

>Implying we are

>now I have a 1,2 kg less than before running
Just because your scale can display your weight in 0.1 kg increments doesn't mean it's 0.1 kg accurate. Having said that, losing that much water weight sounds plausible, plus some of that could have been lost through breathing (O2 goes in, CO2 comes out). How long was your run?
>weight meter
It's called a scale.

>tfw have no other choice but to do my running on treadmill
am i fucking up my legs lads?

>no other choice but to do my running on treadmill
How is there no outdoor place to run?

socially anxious beta agoraphobe who doesn't want people seeing me rum

run*

You aren't landing on your toes, are you? Yo want to sort of land mostly center foot / slightly heel and roll through each step.

Just go running at night. You think there aren't people watching you clomp around on the treadmill at a gym?

I sleep at night and I have a treadmill at home

>I sleep at night
Like as soon as the sun goes down?

well I try to get to bed by 10 so yeah

Go to a running store and get fitted. Might cost at first but then you can just order a similar model when they wear out. Also if the soles are squishy, get inserts.

Have any of you guys tried to run with socks on treadmill ? It feels powerful

>running on a track
I hope you at least run clockwise as much as counterclockwise.

Also running on trails isnt nearly as bad as you think, just as long as you run with proper form. Treadmills are boring more than anything.

t. cross country runner who has never had any injuries.

Don't listen to that user, 30 min 10k is decent

You're knees won't be bad unless you heel strike or have shitty shoes

Nap

Too much speed. 80% at HR Zone 1 or 2, 20% at zone 4 or 5.

>at my gym
Get outside. The dreadmill is bad for you. You should onky use it as a last resort.

>music
None. Get out to the trail and start doing some easy miles. You will start seeing how nice it is to run without music distracting you.

>Is it normal/sustainable to have my heart rate in the 180's for 10+ minutes?
What are your HR zones? Have you done a max test to find this out? For me, 180's is Zone 5, which corresponds to intervals. That is not good if I was going 10+ minutes in that zone. If it was Zone 4 (161-171 for me), it would be okay since that's lactate threshold and doing a tempo run once a week is beneficial.

>mile best
6:06. However, I will admit I'm horrible at the short distances up to 10k. Past that is where I do best.

It may possibly be due to water loss and minimal glycogen depletion. Remember, your body loses potassium and sodium in sweat. Though it's not much, all the little stuff adds up.

I've only done up to a 50 miler. I hope you practiced doing a run/walk/run procedure. You can sonewhat get away with just marathon training for a 50k if it has little elevation climb, but past that is a different challenge. I hope you also done b2b long runs with plenty of hills. Good luck.

>b...b....but muh dragon ball and naruto!
Dumbasses.

Build your aerobic base first. That is, do more miles before you introduce speed work. You may find this hard to believe, but slow running and more miles does a lot to increase your speed.

Guys, I have a question and this seem like the best place to ask.

I just want to know about how many calories I burn doing a three-mile long walk everyday. It's 1.5 miles there and back and takes me about an hour. I'm 177 lbs at 6'1". Every site I go to says something else and I just don't know which one is right.

Are Adidas Questar CCs any good for running? Only shoe that fits my feet perfectly but can't find people talking about it anywhere.
