I hate using the term, but compared to most of you nowadays I'm pretty sure that I'm an 'oldfag'. Been on Jow Forums for most of my teenage and adult life. Started some time before boxxy, so maybe early 2009?
You have no idea how great board culture was back then. There was no politics suppressing every form of FUN. There was total freedom, without fear of reprisal. It was an oasis in a desert of low quality content. It was the final frontier, lawless and wild.
/b/ in particular had its glory days back then, and is the board I frequented mostly. Let me make myself absolutely clear: there were no SJWs or other such degenerates. They were mostly confined to other shitty websites, like... god I forget the name... it wasn't ebaumsworld, but I believe it began with E? Was a forum that got closed down or something. Retarded extremists and wannabe criminals were confined to zoklet, while 'hackers' and those that only lightly broke the law were confined to their own private forums and stuff like blackhatworld.
So we were basically isolated from outside influence, which meant the culture grew and developed spectacularly.
Camwhores were ruthlessly doxxed, emos were told to cut themselves, and did, with timestamps. Raids were conducted, memes were created. Everybody was on the same wavelength: white, ironically racist and slightly sociopathic. Schadenfreude was king.

Jow Forums is way less edgy than it ever used to be. people have no idea how bad it was. those were the days when goatse was being hacked onto Times Square in NYC. these "prominent original users" are mostly just liberal pussies who got mad when their original /a/ fag-fest got invaded by Something Awful

The thing I loved about /b/ back then was how quickly a thread could spiral out of control. Especially when it came to raids or doxxing people, such as OP or some camwhore. It was beautiful.
What made it so was the perfect pair of opposites:
On one hand, you had a bunch of people still naive to the ways of the internet and how quickly a bunch of sweaty losers sitting in basements could coordinate together in autistic outbursts of productivity.
On the other you had a core of highly intelligent autists employing ground-breaking software (for the day) highly effectively, to produce epic amounts of OC, coupled with a huge random array of nerds ready to do ANYTHING 'for the lulz'. Especially so because they knew there was not a single hope in hell they would be caught

Too many people are obsessed with leaving some sort of trace on Jow Forums, whether by contactfagging, spamming shit or forcing memes. Too many posters are focused only on 'BTFO-ing' a subculture they hate and make posts which contribute nothing. Too many people repost content, even when it's not appropriate to post that kind of content.

There is far too much e-celeb worship (by this, I also mean posts that deride e-celebs).

Good jokes, discussion and content still gets made on a relatively consistent basis, but it gets covered under irrelevant shit too much.

When I was younger, I felt like the majority of posts were funny and good. Nowadays it feels I gotta trawl through shit to find something good.

Overall I don't think this place became worse by itself. The internet changed and such changes are reflected here.

I don't think anyone from "back in the day" thinks highly of Jow Forums compared to what it was. Difference is that many of us are losers who are stuck here forever, whereas most of the prominent original posters moved on with their lives.

April Fool's earlier this year, where the whole site ended up turning into one giant sissy ERP-fest, was the first time the site felt fun since 2012. I first started posting on Jow Forums back in 2008, during Code Geass season 2. So I'm not the oldest of oldfags but I've seen quite a bit of the board's history. I've also downloaded some of the major Jow Forums archive torrents and plan to do some analysis at some point.

Pre-2010 I only really posted on a, d, and g. Now I post on g, his, pol, r9k, out, ck, diy, trash. I wish I could like sci but that board is like 90% fucking retards. The stupidest stuff I've seen on this site has been on sci.

So in my view, there were maybe four "eras" of site culture. Pre-archiving, post-archiving, early-modern, contemporary.

Automated archives marked the first transition. I think that's when a lot of the "pure fun" started to diminish. It was no longer ephemeral - if you posted something, people would remember. There were no more Jow Forums legends, there were now records.

Post-archiving to early-modern is harder to pin down. I consider the main changes to be a decrease in site-wide identity. "Anime website / not an anime website". Less difference between "nighttime posting" and "daytime posting". More general threads on all boards. Formation of many board sub-communities.

The transition from early modern to contemporary is marked by moot leaving. There is no more site-wide identity. There are multiple "containment boards" (mlp, pol, trash) whose topics often fit into other boards, but whose communities are immense compared to their "parent categories". To the outside world, Jow Forums is Jow Forums, not /b/. The weaboo roots of the site are irrelevant to nearly all of the site's modern culture.

I plan to eventually do a bunch of research and analysis and write up a real research paper on the evolution of Jow Forums's culture over time. For some reason I still love this place - it's a lot harder nowadays, but you can still see the raw humanity of anonymity and get the occasional insightful conversation or argument. I guess that's enough.

There are other niche discussion websites with eccentric communities, but there will never again on this Earth be a 2008-2010 Jow Forums.

That said, I plan to create my own discussion website. Check hubbub.pub in a year from now. It won't be like old Jow Forums, but I think it'll be good.

Yeah that's an interesting point, I probably started posting in /b/ around late 2009, then moved around from board to board. Around that time, in my opinion, I'd say /b/ was pretty awful, it's nostalgic in a sense but it was really just as bad as Jow Forums nowadays with the same sort of posts/hurtful comments and so on. My personal highlights were around 2010 to 2012, it was a great time to be on /mu/, a lot of good/cool trips and some great share/recommendation threads on /mu/. The same goes for Jow Forums before it was shut down, as far as I remember there were mostly just funny cringe threads and tfw threads, people were much more polite and it was a real friendly place, almost like Jow Forums, without the advice.

No, Jow Forums isn't as it was, but I've never personally minded change. The major principals like anonymity, post equality, and general openness are what brought me here then and continue to bring me here now. Yes, all those things has its negatives. You can't have freedom without a bunch of annoying assholes, but it's worth it.
