I'm not claiming to be an expert at being mentally tough, but I've had to deal with bad shit for years and developed some tricks to keep me sane. Most has been said in this thread already though but here's a list:

This one is the most important because it'll be your anchor. When shit happens in life and you get knocked down, you eventually get back up and focus on the future. Just have realistic goals ready beforehand, be creative.
To sum it all up: Focus attention and energy on shit that benefits you, instead of running around in circles. Don't fight negative thoughts and emotions when they arise; give your body some time to flush the stress hormones out of your system.
It's tough. Best way I found was to create a superiority complex.

It might sound like bullshit, easier said than done but this is what every other dad should teach their kids, like when you were a kid and you fell on the ground and your dad told you to not cry and be brave. Little you might be wanting to cry your eyes out but you hold it in because your old man told you that you have to be strong and you want to be strong and make him proud. Well eventually you stop doing it just for your dad and start doing it by yourself because it feels good to feel strong.
Like other anons said, meditation works, not because of some zen shit just because taking a time to center yourself and calm your thoughts helps a lot. Even if its just going out for a cig and some alone time, its important to think about yourself and the way you interact with the world.
