Don't put your desk in a corner. Move it to the left and put a small bookshelf to the right, and it'll feel less claustrophobic.

Consider putting something behind your monitor, maybe a poster or a really thin shelf.

There really is not a lot of room to the left... the only thing I could do would be to swap the place of the lamp and the desk.

Its the color and pattern. A good looking oriental/iranian rug is pretty expensive so just stick to that for now and invest when you got the coin. They really are comfortable.
