I was never "smart, but lazy" - I was "smart, but hostile to the point of rage". As far as I was concerned, if I could demonstrate that I knew the material on tests, the teacher had no fucking right to ask me to complete homework or to participate in class, so I simply wouldn't. I also hated every last other student to a degree that would have made Adam Lanza blush and tell me to tone it down a little. (I can vividly remember the day in 6th grade when I had a moment of clarity about what group projects were all about, and swore to myself never to participate in one without engaging in deliberate spiteful sabotage ever again.)

College was somewhat better, but I still ended up with the occasional W on my transcript when I'd realize after the drop date that the professor was going to require me to do stupid shit.

Unfortunately for your argument, in the "real world" I have fucking levitated through every organization I've ever joined or worked for, because 95% of the population literally can't do anything, and there is a colossal amount of work lying around waiting to be done as a result - and anyone who walks in and just starts asserting the authority to start doing that work ends up in charge.

I still consider myself a robot, though, because the hatred never dies and never lessens. In many ways, it only grows worse over time.

That aside, the bigger problem I see with degrees being wasteful isn't because the degree is wasteful, but it's because the person pursuing it didn't really put enough forethought into how passionate they really are about that craft/practice/discipline. They just go into it, still going through the motions from high school, and are suddenly surprised when the major they really didn't put time into investigating turns out to be nothing like they thought it would be. Rather than taking responsibility for their own lack of foresight, they blame their lack of post-grad success on anything and everything else.
