Anime shows are for plebs, anime movies are for the true patricians.

Personally, I found it mediocre. There's a single scene of good animation in the first episode, then a rather nonsensical and boring "plot," which is just largely episodic. I feel like Bebop is only popular because it's among the most entry-level of all entry-level series, is overwhelmingly western, and is likely the first show any fan saw on Toonami before they got into the genre seriously. I, on the other hand, watched it after seeing upwards of five-hundred shows, it was unremarkable; especially with high expectations.

That and outlaw star are the two I hear from people that are convinced they are the greatest anime ever.
I found them both over rated

Trigun is a really good one. Vash is a much more nuanced character than he seems at a glance. It's an older show now though and even when it was new elements of the animation are kind of lacking so I can't say it's the best.

Shed a tear to each of these shows. Renmeis music and world building is impeccable. NHKs depiction of depression and neet life is spot on. Gunbuster has one of the (if not the) best endings to a show I have ever seen.

I'm watching this right now. It was between this and Soul Eater for my next anime. I'm not really crazy about 50 episode series, but FMA seems worth it so far.

Howl's Moving Castle. It's emotional, the OST is brilliant and idyllic; and overall it's a moving film.

I have spent the last five years of my life on this cesspool but resisted watching any anime that entire time. The one that finally got me to cave and check it out was Evangelion, therefore Neon Genesis Evangelion is the best anime.

Here's another show I really like, probably the most underrated anime I've ever seen. Yakushiji Ryouko no Kaiki Jikenbo, AKA Ryouko's Case File. It's really good and yet nobody's ever heard of it. It's about a sorta robot detective and his crazy but hot and awesome chick boss solving supernatural mysteries. Watch it if you can track it down.

FMAB is widely regarded as the single best recommendation you can make to someone who wants to get in to anime.
It's generic but very well executed, has good characters and a good plot, and is somewhat edgy but not offensive.
It isn't dated either. A lot of people are posting Gunbuster in the thread, but I think Gunbuster hasn't aged particularly well compared to something like Akira. You should probably only go watch Gunbuster if you're already in to anime and want to broaden your exposure.

I'm one of the Gunbuster posters and you're probably right about it, but this didn't seem like a "recommend a first anime for me" thread.

I would say from start to finish the perfect anime was Ashita no Joe.
Fist of the North Star would be up there but it has a lot of filler. If we were just talking about its OVAs then yah without a doubt it would be the best.

I got a fair few episodes in and he hasn't started boxing yet. When does it become a boxing anime? Am I in for disappointment expecting Ippo? Art style and music are great though.
