I'll never understand what people see in HxH. The action isn't that good, the characters are unrelateable and strange (except for the Ants) and the majority of the anime is training arcs that don't matter because every fight is won by asspulls.

I can sort of get what they see in it, especially if put into a battle shonen perspective alongside the big 3 and others of the same grain, nurdo, blech, 1p, fairyfail, dragonbaru, yyh, slayers etc. In comparison it's as good as fillerless, the nen system is really elaboratively put up (altho as with the others it suffers from characters taking a break mid fight and explaining how and what happened which otoh is almost necessary at times too, I thought many of the fights were pretty creative though. The world they're travelling through felt wide and varied. Ant arc was probably the one I liked the least, dragged on for very long, a lot of ant characters, like Cheetuh and his attempts to powerup seemed purposeless. Anyway, within its genre I think it may be among the best there is, balancing the dark without ever losing the light hearted side.
Venturing to see a 100+ ep shonen tends to bring some natural reluctance. Give the first 10 eps a whirl, either you'll be hooked and all episodes will be watched through in notime, or you'll just drop it.

Berserk is my favorite piece of media in general, I've never seen a series better than it. Amazing characters, well thought out plot, badass panels, and it's just oozing with an intricate level of symbolism. Too bad the newest adaption sucks. I'd highly recommend it to just about everyone.

I'm sure you've heard this a bunch, but that really is a case of them overdoing the first few episodes to draw people in. If you generally like formula but just disliked the edge, you can start with the Golden Age arc, a flashback of sorts to Guts' past and why he is the way he is now. It's a huge part of the story where so many of the characters really shine, and it's significantly turned down in terms of edge. Afterwards, that sort of thing kinda kicks off again, but it's still toned down compared to the first arc.
