Anyway someone tried sharing this with me. I fucking hate this fake news shit. They did a smear piece on fasting 2 weeks ago based on a bullshit rat study.

People say "why do you care? just dont read it!" - well my unfit friends keep trying to tell me I am harming my body by exerting myself, fasting 18 hours a day, eating 150g protein. And they roll their eyes when I tell them to read a metastudy or link a doctors blog. So I stopped talking to them when they talk to me about it, but then they just shit talk me in groups at the pub. So now I see them much less.

God I fucking hate The Guardian. anyone else suffer from this?

High protein diets are a gymcel meme. You need ~4g above maintenance level to build more muscle. There's a good chance most of you are eating more protein than necessary, which really only serves to spike blood sugar, especially if saturated fat intake is not adequate (common with protein isolates).

Why argue with people in the first place? Just say "ok" and move on. The vast majority of people are to dense and stupid to have an actual dialogue with about nutrition or other important matters and simply want to talk at you.

My friends found out I was doing intermittent fasting and asked me "why? Aren't you hungry" and were genuinely interested in having a discussion about it and actually learning WHY I was, with most conceding 'they could never'. Surround yourself with better people.

Maintenance is whatever your body requires to maintain lean body mass. And the reason its beneficial for gaining and maintaining muscle weight is because it turns to glucose, serving exactly the same function as carbohydrates which is the most anabolic and essential in retention of intramuscular water. But again, it's not like everyone is necessarily interested in just muscle gains, these things are not very healthy and people get very, very sick from eating high protein diets (see: rabbit starvation, Vilhjalmur Stefansson on lean vs. fatty meat)

The guardian is lost, has been lost for years. What used to be a champion for the working class is now a hybrid abomination, part Huffington post, part tumblr. I agree, but it doesn't mean high protein diets are a meme, plus just because you only synthesize a pathetic ammount of muscle proteins a day(around 2-10g a day) doesn't mean you need only to eat slightly over "maintenance" in order to gain, because you need to eat a disproportionate ammount of protein in order to benefit in terms of anabolism.

As much as 400g protein daily has been shown to not cause any bad effects in humans.
And eating mostly protein daily also isn't an issue on the short term either, the whole thing about explorers starving on rabbit cannot be explained at all with the anti protein dogma because rabbits are not 100% protein to begin with.
The reason why "rabbit starvation" became a meme is because people eating mostly protein and very little calories basically never accumulate any fat, and just burn through their fat stores like they would on any diet that restricted them of calories.

The reason you are able to survive for a period of time without saturated fats is solely down autophagy, this is the only reason anyone is able to stay on a vegan diet for extended periods of time and hence why they all eventually get sickly underweight. First off, blood sugar spikes are not anabolic, at best they are anti catabolic.
Eating high protein isn't stupid.
Africans don't starve to death if they eat enough calories, period, makes no logical sense for anyone to starve on anything if they eat enough calories unless they have a fucked up metabolic disorder that would kill them anyway regardless of diet.

Just because blood sugar rises and insulin spikes from eating protein doesn't mean it is the anabolic component of dietary protein, eating protein by itself is anabolic and anti catabolic, eating protein literally reduces myostatin, increases muscle satellite cell proliferation and mTor and MS6K and IGF-1 all in conjunction, you can't isolate just one thing and claim it is the only reason why a nutrient is anabolic.

Plus, every single animal meat has saturated fats in varying ammounts, even trace ammounts are found in fish, so again it's not that they were eating 0 saturated fats, because even if they were eating 0 saturated fats(which is impossible) there is literally 0 reasons why doing so would make them starve or suffer in terms of health.
Some fat is necessary, but it doesn't have to be saturated.

that said, to be fair I think you'll find a vast majority of reporting that's vaguely scientific is utter bullshit, and usually it even gets worse when it comes to nutrition. Turning evidence into practice at a health systems level is my job and it's stupid how often people get this kind of thing wrong, journalists more than most.

Also basically everything I read on there I take with a massive grain of salt to account for their absurd leanings and try to cherry pick the good info, I don't trust any major media source but at least can account for their biases as I go whereas others are less predictable
