Just imagine, at any point until the past century or so, any young man could go down to the taverns or the docks and volunteer for a voyage, expedition, trade mission, mercenary band, etc. Travel across the world to uncharted territory and get involved in extraordinary adventures. Even if it was likely that you would die(Magellan's circumnavigation crew survived with like 18 out of 220 people), you could at least die knowing that you dared to go out and meet the world's challenges. And if you did happen to live and return to your homeland, the riches and fame would sustain you for the rest of your days, and you would have lifelong unbreakable loyal bonds with your fellow survivors.
