I always took this to mean that they studied obese people who lost weight, only to find that they eventually regained weight, but that this was really a consequence of the obese people's personalities and tendencies to overeat.
Is it instead that obese people who lose weight find it easier to convert the same calorie surplus to fat than a long-term slim person would?

It's the classic dietary failure argument, that changes to habits don't stick and are thus not effective. You could be an honest person and say that the diet worked and abandoning lead to failure or you could sell books and say that dieting fails because it didn't stick through no fault of the person doing the diet, but due to the very nature of dieting.

diet implies some short of short term change to nutrition when it should really be called a lifestyle change so people that decide to hop on understand this is not some 2 month thing but a pernament lifestyle choice

I don't diet or exercise, but I try to visualize the body I want to have and mold my body to the image I have in my mind. I think it's already making a difference. Even if I haven't lost any weight, I'm becoming more satisfied with the person that I am, and that's what counts!
