ITT: Guide to Making It

0. Get rid of your victim mentality.
>>If you're one of those posters who loves whining about their height, bone ratios, face, dick size, or anything else you can't change, stop. Stop whining. Whining will change nothing about your circumstance, but it reinforces the pathetic and toxic mentality that you're a victim who is at the mercy of circumstance; that just isn't true. If Nick Vujicic (youtube.com/watch?v=iveFgpXqGLE), Kyle Maynard (youtube.com/watch?v=OPFmq2x_0Mg), and Travis Mills (youtube.com/watch?v=kHx1k4ylojo) can find joy and purpose in life, you really have no excuse. Life is full of people who were given a lot and wasted it and people who were given less but worked to become something. If Peter Dinklage can be rich and famous, you're a bitch if you're whining about being 5'7.

1. Cease all addictions other than books and training.
>>This includes work - drive is healthy, addiction is not. Porn is terrible for you, weed is very harmful to your brain, cigarettes are cancer sticks and even if you don't get cancer, they destroy your cardio capacity. However, these are all subordinate to this: you shouldn't allow yourself to be controlled by substances. That makes you weak, and you should pursue strength in all things.

2. Lift and do cardio, and fix diet.
>>Despite the general obsession with finding the right program, most programs you find will work decently - just look for something that very strong people advocate or that has shown results; I like 5*5 programs like SS, but if you wanna do something Greyskull or AllPro's Beginner Routine, fine. Do it. Just fucking lift - they all work, thanks to general adaptation syndrome. If you've looked at each of the options and done a little reading on the science behind each one and still aren't sure, read this: ironaddicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21121
>>Cardio isn't optional if you want to be good at life and sports. You will be a more capable lifter with higher work capacity. Pick a HIIT program, do it correctly (buy a heart monitor and find your heart rate zones, stick to your intervals). Keeps you from getting fat, but more importantly makes you more capable.
>>Diet management doesn't necessitate calorie counting on myfitnesspal (although I really recommend it), but you should eat good foods instead of sugary processed trash. Have a mental calorie/macros counter if you're not gonna actually track them,

3. Sleep.
>>There's a mountain of neurological literature on why you need sleep, and an equally large amount of physiological data on why your body needs sleep to recover from exercise. Get 7 hours/night minimum, 9 if you can.

4. Prioritize your life.
>>Make a list of all the things you care about. Then make a separate list for each item on List 1 and on these lists, make a list of things you can do to further that thing. If you don't care about anything, list all the things you value in a human being and work towards becoming those. Make a plan for how to achieve the things you care about most - you can't usually do everything, so choose, and plan to do later what you can't do now. Finally, make a list of every way in which you waste time. This isn't everything you enjoy, but does include hours of time on the internet or consuming TV and movies. These are good for you only in moderation. Synthesize these plans into a daily schedule. Jordan Peterson is something of a meme at this point, but irrespective of your thoughts on his beliefs, it's hard to argue with his time management advice: schedule yourself the ideal day, one after which you can be happy with what you've done. This needn't be drudgery, although some responsibilities certainly need handling.

5. Read.
>>You should read classic novels - these narratives tell us about life, they make us way more emotionally intelligent, they entertain us and make us interesting. You also should read about philosophy, economics, math and the natural world. You should do this because it challenges your mind, but also because they address many of the questions / grievances we have with the world, and even if they don't satisfy our gripes, it's cathartic to interact with others' similar struggles. (This is fairly intuitive even if not always articulated - there's a reason y'all like bitching about your height or dick size or autism here with others like you.) /lit/ is a really great resource to get started. It doesn't have to be long; 15 minutes per day is more than many people do. If you can do an hour of fiction/nonfiction combined daily, you're golden. If you hate reading, DO IT ANYWAY. Doesn't have to be long, but you should do it.

6. Work.
>>You have to pay bills. Only the weak are reliant on someone else for this if they can avoid it. Moreover, if you ever want a woman or family, you need to be first be able to attract her, and then be able to support them.
>>If you're in education, be dedicated to your studies. First, you'll find that you enjoy them more if you try to. Second, you have an opportunity that many don't, and you should take advantage of it. Third, and most importantly, you don't get many second chances - if you want to be able to do anything other than hard menial labor for a living, you're likely going to need that degree.
>>If you're already working, work hard. Figure out where you want to be career-wise (probably something you put down on the first list you made under #4) and make a plan to get there. However, don't let this be an excuse for inaction or terrible decisions.
>>If you're unemployed, find a job. Any job. Just start fucking working. Start bringing in some money, and go from there; without some money, you don't have much breathing room with which to quit a job you hate and find one you love, and ideally you wouldn't quit until you have the better one lined up.

7. Learn skills.
>>Learning things is fucking FUN. Even more, it makes you better at life. Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu are some of the most fulfilling things I've ever done, but they also make me a more capable man. Learn things you can use, whether it's car maintenance or coding.

8. Socialize.
>>You first priority should be to find close male friends. These friendships have been necessary for men since the dawn of time. These should be with men who will push you to be better, with whom you share similar values and beliefs. These can be hard to find, but often are guys you've been friends with awhile like highschool/college buddies, or other men at your church, work, or gym.
>>Your second priority should be general socialization. If you're doing all of the above, you will quickly become a more interesting person. The golden rules of socializing are these: 1) Be interested in what people think, and why. 2) Listen more than you talk. 3) Be genuine. 4) Don't be an asshole if you can avoid it. That's it. People like other people they think are being genuine with them or care about them, and they're pretty good at seeing through bullshit. If you're a robot, things may be awkward at first; do it anyway. The only way to get better is practice.

9. Go to church.
>>If you're atheistic, you can ignore this, but if you're undecided or a believer, attend church. If you're undecided, it will help you make up your mind. If you're a believer, it will reinforce your belief and encourage you. Moreover, it provides structure in your life.
>>Christianity is the only reason I'm not a suicidal NEET; it does wonders for providing a framework to make sense of the world, and gives you structure and purpose in an aimless life.

10. Do something for others.
>>It doesn't really matter what it is, but do something selfless regularly. There's very little that is more fulfilling than knowing that you made someone else's life better in a tangible way; give money to charity, volunteer, help an elderly neighbor, it doesn't matter. Just do something.

We're not all gonna make it, because many are too weak or unwilling. But if you do these things and are consistent, you will.

Good thread. Thank you user.
Now, where are you at in your life? What did this philosophy of life bring to you personally?

How to get rid of obsession with videogames? I'm not even playing any but spend a lot of time reading gaming news/watching videogames related videos. Recently i spent whole weekend watching e3. I just can't get over it, it's part of my daily routine I can't control.

Lost me at church

I spent my entire childhood and adolescence playing video games, and for me at least I just fell out of it naturally. Games just aren't as fun to me anymore and I get bored of them a lot faster, although I'm also more depressed so that may have to do with it. But you should pursue a hobby that you can be proud of and show off a bit, like playing an instrument. You don't have to give up video games but you should make something else that is a more productive use of your time your priority.

Doing the job I've always wanted to do, am 3 years out of grad school. hit 2/3/4/5 some time ago and am trying for 2.5/4/5/6 but that's a long way off. Married the girl of my dreams in undergrad and have a kid on the way. Don't get on here much anymore (found the board in college) but got on tonight since I'm in an airport and figured I'd post something I needed to read when I posted a lot.

you too brah.

Aquinas, Newton, Kierkegaard and many others disagree, but that's beside the point. Read what I wrote: "If you're atheistic, you can ignore this, but if you're undecided or a believer, attend church. If you're undecided, it will help you make up your mind." Irrespective of whether you are a believer or attend church, the rest of the post is good advice.

see above

It's a start, but it's not enough. Work hard user. It's worth it.

Figured that was a bit beyond the scope of this post since sound investing takes a substantial amount of info, but yes. Saving and investing is hugely important.

Just for you, I dug up my old meal plans from college. Here's what I bought most weeks:
1. eggs + cheese for great omelettes
2. whole milk
3. canned chili (I liked hormel in college)
4. OATS
5. greek yogurt
6. ramen
7. canned tuna (sparingly - otherwise you absorb mercury which is very toxic)
8. beans (I liked the canned baked ones)
9. rice (rice cookers are cheap so it's worth getting one & rice is the cheapest source of calories)
It's doable.

Take a week where you don't allow yourself to do anything videogame related. Only things you can do for fun are sports, reading or board games. At the end of the week, decide whether you missed out on anything of value. If it's worth keeping videogames as a part of your life, then budget the time. If not, don't. During the week you'll wanna cave, but you must remind yourself that only the weak allow themselves to be controlled by their appetites.

What if Orthodox Christianity intrigues me but I want to make a living as a software dev and part time furry artfag which would be a one way ticket to hell? How does one balance two mutually incompatible lifestyles like that?

Otherwise, great shit OP. Gonna save this thread.

Making cringy art isnt a sin

Thanks for this thread, user.

I recently started getting my shit together and this is just what I need. Have you read any Alan Watts by chance? I discovered him not too long ago and some of his ideas were pretty eye-opening to me.

>The more a person knows of himself, the more he will hesitate to define his nature and to assert what he must necessarily feel, and the more he will be astounded at his capacity to feel in unsuspected and unpredictable ways. Still more will this be so if he learns to explore, or feel, deeply into, his negative states of feeling—his loneliness, sorrow, grief, depression, or fear—without trying to escape from them.

ugh fiiiiinnnnee

F A GG OT

I think they probably are mutually incompatible, depending on what you mean by "furry artfag" (I don't know why being a software dev would be incompatible with Orthodox Christianity). You have to choose. In your position, I would learn as much about Orthodox CHristianity as I could, and then make a decision. In my belief, it's a very easy choice - one has far reaching (and, I believe eternal) implications in every area of your life, and the other is a fetish or a hobby. But it's a choice you have to make.

I don't know much about Watts, but the quote you posted seems to have more empty rhetoric than substance. I think the gist of it though, that self-exploration and development allow for a greater depth of experiences and more maturity in dealing with them, is generally true. I don't think that feeling has inherent value though - most people would rather feel nothing than severe grief, and with good reason.

Going to church or any place of worship has provided for thousands of years:
>a place to meet the community and socialize
>a communal activity (important for self-identification, sense of group belonging, etc.)
>structure in an otherwise fairly chaotic life
>temporary escape/relief from hustle of daily life
>meditative benefits through prayer/chanting

atheists generally don't realize that without religion they are giving these benefits up as well. if you don't go to church, you need another way to get the things it has provided human society since its inception, whether through meditation, getting involved in the community, rest time where you shut off from the outside world, etc.

Attached: file.png (764x551, 132K)

All true, although I think that reducing religion to these (very real) benefits marginalizes its value if you truly believe.

Guide to making it
>be a man and disregard all opinions including your own.

incoherent and self-negating

Fantastic post, user.

Could you elaborate on the church point? I think I'm more leaning towards atheism, but I've always been educated within a christian frame and it's a bit difficult finding a moral compass that doesn't adhere to the beliefs I've been passed on (not saying that morality cannot exist without religion, I'm just stating my case).

What would you do, user? I'd appreciate some advice here.

>9 hours sleep

Attached: 1517757594552s.jpg (125x125, 3K)

Yeah, certainly. I'm a Christian because it seems like the most correct way to explain the world I experience today. There are some questions that Christianity doesn't provide a definitive answer to, but I'm far more comfortable with those than I am the questions that go unanswered without Christianity; hence, my belief outweighs my doubt. I think that if you're expecting every question to have a clear-cut answer, you're either thinking uncritically or will always be unsatisfied; it's a process of choosing.

I think that a Christian morality is ultimately the only coherent one, but that's based on a lot of reading and thought that you should do for yourself if you want to settle this in your own mind (which you should - faith is probably the most important issue a person deals with).

In your shoes, I'd first thoroughly explore Christianity. Read the Bible, go to church, do some research on orthodoxy. Even if you're very skeptical, IMO it's worth your time. I've done this with Islam as well, and while I was obviously unconvinced, it was very beneficial. Read through the Bible, starting with the New Testament and then the Old. Read C.S. Lewis' Mere Christianity, and G.K. Chesterton's Orthodoxy. Then look at Aquinas' defenses and articulations of doctrine, and Luther's writings.

That's really the only way I know of to decide with any certainty what you believe. For most of highschool and half of college, I wasn't sold on Christianity, and I'm someone that's not able to be happy making decisions I know are uninformed. Reading and research were what did it for me.

Church has numerous benefits that pointed out, but I think that unless you actually believe, it's LARPing that can be replaced by other things.

I'd really encourage you to thoroughly read through both the Bible and supporting theologians (especially Lewis). It's the only way I know of to ensure you make a decision where you know what you're doing as much as you can. Good luck user.

Neurologically supported until your brain is done developing (at which point most people won't be able to sleep for 9 straight hours anyway).

There's not a shred of evidence that weed is harmful to the brain, controlling the munchies helps you harden your will when it comes to dieting. I make sure not to smoke more than 1-2 times a week, when I control myself in that high state I'm much better at controlling myself when sober. Aside from the "go to church", and "weed is bad", OP made some good points.

You were probably just not interested or you mature later. Same thing happened to me, years later I took up the same reading list due to interest and understood everything first read .

i'm fucking 24 years old so there's not really any room to "mature later" at this stage.

For me, I came back being christian spiritually since I'm miserable when I lived as an atheist. Had suicidal thoughts, have shitty selfish mentality, etc. Not saying that atheism will lead you to this but having someone to lean on real or not at crucial times especially when you're alone helps you.

Yes.

yup.

you've already lost.

I wouldn't.

do it anyway. Maybe you never understand Kant, but there are many things you can still learn with some work. Start with a few minutes every day, and take notes on what you read. Read summaries and sparknotes to help you get what you just read. Another thing to consider is a cognitive training program like LearningRX. A friend of mine has a developmentally disabled son who made a ton of progress (went from testing at an 83 IQ to a 101) with that. Good luck user.

Just popping into the thread to say my ex girlfriend was the god-daughter if he guy that raised that goaticorn. He keeps its skull in a velvet lined box, and I’ve held the skull. He also writes books and is a neopagan religious leader on a local level in the county just south of mine. Anyway have a good thread.

1) read this. sites.google.com/site/hackbookeasypeasy/home
it's very, fundamentally, important that you read this
>but it's a book, a whole book
you will read it in 4 hours

2) read this:
amazon.com/War-Art-Winning-Creative-Battle/dp/1501260626
>another whole book?
It's very, very, very short, you read it in 1.5 hour
>but what the hell does it have to do with all this shit?
You won't understand now, but a clue is in this post
or even in this video:
youtube.com/watch?v=6B-dG-IwNmA

the clue is that you are currently doing the WRONG things, and there is a way to get you to do the RIGHT ones. But doing the right ones might be a daunting step to take, so you READ this book, and learn that YOUR SHIT gets done just by doing it.

Bros, i need your help. I was about to make a thread, but maybe it's better to post in this one.

I'm an obese (30+ bodyfat), kinda awkward (genuine aspie) guy here. There's a week long holiday where i live where all the sluts in the city gather around to party hard barely dressed. Part of me wants to go to the party, all awkward and shit, and try to score. But i know i'm awkward in the flirting-with-strangers department, I have no idea how to dance, and my body looks like shit. Should i go to it and try my luck/gain experience with 10% chance of success, or should i keep in my cocoon mode and try with Tinder before moving on to on-the-spot flirting with strangers?

Attached: obese-man-statue.jpg (427x781, 50K)

Penis

>where all the sluts in the city gather around to party hard barely dressed.

This is your problem right here.

Imagine meeting a guy that thinks you will fuck anything but at the same time he is a fatass and socially awkward.

How do you think they will respond?

You put other people down because you hate yourself brother.

you should read OP's post and do it. ignore the thots and fix yourself.

STONERS BTFO

So i should not go, and just keep focusing in myself?
I don't get what you mean. Do you mean i should not go and keep focusing on myself, until i love myself?
Or are you condemning how i referred to them as ''sluts''? Because if that's the case, they are dressed as sluts, and they usually go around with 8 -15 men in a single night. I'm not saying it's a good or bad thing, i'm just saying how it is.

Correct. follow the OP to the letter. this is solid and will make your life much better.

there's no reason on earth that a socially awkward obese man who can't dance should go to a thot dance party to flirt. there's no way he's going to get what he's after and it's not a good use of time anyway.

I think you should push a solid bowel movement out your anus and into your underpants. Then, without making any attempt to clean yourself, you should go to the party.

Do you think he got laid that night?

You can read that in 1.5 hours. It's really short, it's a fucking nail in the head.

Any good book suggestions?

Thanks, bros. I now have my mind in it's place.

Mods should please sticky this thread.

user what church should I join?
My options are Catholic or Protestant as my town hosts several of each, my qualms with Catholicism is the pope being a representative of Jesus on earth, as I believe Jesus to have no equal here on Earth, together with the undefined payment cycle of getting into heaven.
My qualm with protestantism is not the free-er interpretation of the Bible, but the open to all (((backgrounds))) part.
I am as well Dutch and my people's history has always been leaning to protestant due to the Martin Luther events.
Another point that I can think of is that, going through Catholicism's payment into heaven plan would enable me to both accept 3:16, while doing some extra efforts during my life, which would be similair to Pascal's Wager.
Also I want to join church because I like Jesus and I want to get into more outdoor social circles.

Thank you for sharing your great advice!

Skimmed. Seems solid desu. Surprising on this board.

Take heed, ye lost and struggling.

Going is a terrible idea; instead use your time more wisely. Why do you care about sluts if you are obese and awkward? That's severe misprioritization. Read my posts; all of the steps I recommend prepare you to be able to date successfully. Complete those first.

Yes.
>Plato's Republic
>Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited
>Dostoevsky's Brothers Karamazov and Crime & Punishment
>Anything by Steinbeck especially East of Eden
>All of Aquinas' works

>Keynes and Marx>Hayek and Friedman and Hans Hoppe

>Alvin Plantinga's full works
>Montesquieu's Considerations of the Causes of the Greatness of the Romans and their Decline, The Spirit of the Laws, and Defense of the Spirit of the Laws
That should keep you busy for a bit.

I'm Protestant, but that's a decision you should make for yourself based on your understanding of doctrinal differences. I will say that I see a lot of difficulty in reconciling the current pope's apparent heresies with a rigorous Biblical interpretation. Additionally, Catholicism actually has the free-er interpretation of Scripture due to the elevated position of tradition in Church Doctrine.

The best way to make this decision is by researching the differences, starting with Luther's Theses, Calvin's Institutes, Johann Eck's rebuttals to Luther, The Council of Trent, Aquinas and Augustine, then modern theologians like Karl Barth, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Albert Schweitzer, Alvin Plantinga. These, combined with high Biblical literacy will help you figure out what is correct.

Thanks again for all of your advice user, I will do my best to figure it out.
