kh1 was a pretty good arpg with a fun concept and thematic and an easy to follow lighthearted and heartwarming story. 2 mostly just poorly explained a bunch of tacked-on gameplay mechanics that barely matter and didn't bother to help you with the story that developed in a card-based side-game that few people played which made it quite a mess, but it was still fun enough due to the gameplay and boss designs. Haven't really played the others though.

The only angle I can get on KH is that it sells nostalgia because it has Disney characters in them.
I have no such nostalgia because I didn't grow up with Disney, but even if I did, I don't think I could get over the cheesy writing, the horrendous voice acting or the mediocre gameplay.
That being said, I have only seen people play it, I haven't played myself.

It's such a piece of trash in every way. The writing suck, the animations suck, the characters are non-sensical and have cut and paste personalities, it's linear and the overall theme of the game comes of as a forced teenage fantasy love story

Hey, I enjoyed it. Seeing the character finally come togather for the finale was pretty cool, and the kusic was god-tier. Just, too many rehashed worlds for a main entry into the series. Spamming triangle for everything was gay as fuck, and a lot of the story was unessecary filler. Ironically COM, which was an actual rehash of KH1, did a better job reusing old characters and old plot points by having an entire meta-plot about Soras memory, and the existential dread of human memory loss. Also, being the contrarian fuck I am, I liked Chain of Memories combat system, which not only reminded me more of a FF game, but allowed for custom leveling and highly customized combat. Using cards to preset your attacks was a neat tool for combining strategy and tactics.

The cheesy writing was definitely part of the attraction, and I also believe the disney nostalgia had an effect, so you're probably right that you wouldn't enjoy it (or at least not as much as we did). Still recommend trying it out.
