It's really not, but every male (iirc) is required to register for the draft. It's called Selective Service. They register you automatically when you get/renew your driver's license

youre required by law to sign up and register with the selective service, and if we go to war and need a draft then they pull everyone from that pool of registers. there isnt a standing draft or mandatory service like in some countries. its all volunteer. unless something gsuch as ww2 or vietnam comes up again (vietnam needed the draft since no one wanted to volunteer)
