Note that bench press is actually a pretty good full-body lift, it's great for certain athletes that require projecting force through the upper body.

yep, the OHP is the king of upper body exercises and probably the best test of upper body strength (bench is too technical compared to it - e.g. you can't really use a super wide grip for OHP while it's possible for bench). And because it is the best test you don't see any women with good overhead presses, even the roided ones perform far below 2pl8 (meanwhile there's women on this planet benching 3pl8)

Most of Jow Forums aren't past that point so dumbells with their superior range of motion, muscle recruitment, and adduction are superior for gains.

I bench in the smith machine to ensure the bar always lowers forward enough to prevent shoulder impingement, and I don't give a fuck how retarded I look while doing it. Sure, I'm not working stabilizers, but I can load a lot of weight without having to worry about breaking form and fucking up my shoulders. I can then trail my progression by doing unassisted benching at 80 or 90% capacity where I don't have to worry about form breakdown. I recommend this approach to clients, as it's better than skipping bench entirely, and has none of the dangers of benching regularly. The bench press wasn't even a standard lift until recently, so there's no reason to treat is as sacrosanct. The only reason to not do it in a smith machine is fear of being made fun of.
OHP is what really matters.

I don't find people have a hard time remembering cues. The problem is form breakdown is very common on the last rep, which is true of other lifts, but minor form breakdowns for other lifts are not particularly dangerous. Even a minor breakdown for the bench can fuck up your shoulder if its repeated, which happens later in training progressions with higher weights and where people are pushing themselves.
People would be lying if they said they never had a minor final rep form breakdown in their squat that wasn't necessarily significant enough to warrant a reset, but was still there. For the squat, or deadlift, an inch deviation here or there won't necessarily result in an injury, but it can with the bench over time.

...I will say, all of this is moot if there's a good spotter, but people don't always lift with a GOOD spotter. If you're spotter doesn't know what he's doing, then go with the smith machine, or safety bars and bail out of the final rep if you feel you elbows flaring and the bar moving back before it moves up.

I wish people would admit that bench is mostly a vanity/accessory exercise like curls. Yes, it's a compound movement, but it has a short kinetic chain. It's not a fundamental lift. Just let people hit their chest however they feel like it. If you want to use dumbells, a machine, the smith rack, whatever you like. As long as you're doing OHP, press, squat, and DL, how you hit your chest doesn't really matter.

Every other workout. Rotate between OHP and Bench each workout. At the beginning, you should be able to add 5 lbs each workout. When that gets too hard, add 2.5 lbs each workout instead. You should be hitting a new max each workout. That will last for a few months, then you may have to switch to a different program.
