He's speaking from the perspective of a powerlifting coach. If your sport is, say, distance running that metric changes.

HIs main claim to fame, originally, was building strength for football.

Which is how he managed to get away with the whole 'no cardio, no conditioning, no workload' stuff. Don't need that if your guys have coaches (or just overenthusiastic parents) running them ragged already.

He's also at odds with basically every other powerlifting coach. You don't need to be a marathon runner but a baseline of cardio ability massively improves recovery and work capacity.

alot of heavy weight lifters believe that the affect on the heart from lifting is the same as that from running - so why run if your heart is already benefitting

I agree with that idea to a point as well. A set of heavy deads or squats or even bench usually lasts 45 seconds or so. Afterwards my breathing and heart are going at rates almost comparable to a sprint. Almost, but not quite. I think just lifting gives your heart enough exercise for normies.

Now if your goals include athletic performance, running, endurance, whatever, then obv you need to do those things in addition to lifting. Rip's right, but only in the context of just getting stronger.

Except that's generally not what they advise, or at least not solely. Because LISS has basically no recovery costs whereas HIIT and similar conditioning protocols have a nasty tendency to kick the crap out of you.
