Really depends. I used to be a traditional 80s style goth/post-punk myself in my teenage years and I was a "gay friend" to a bunch of girls for a while. Also I got my first and current girlfriend due to my style. She just walked right up to me and we became friends quite quickly. After a week we were partners and now we're together for like 8 months.
Wouldn't recommend it though. My style was toned down a bit as I met my gf. After I wore my 80s trenchcoat, black hat, violet lip-stick and dark fingernails again she began to fear me and told she would have avoided me if she met me this way. She says in this clothes I look like a drug dealer, sex offender or a satanist. Since then I dress normal now... well, more like a neckbeard. Anyway, don't really miss it. Since I dress normal, I don't get spit on by dirty arabs in public places anymore, which is a huge plus.
I'm from Germany by the way. Fuck those RAPEugees and illegal migrants.

Yep, pic related is about as close as you get - it really doesn't work. It's mostly only a fashion thing too, which I think is really the least relevant of being goth.
I personally never cared much about how I dressed (as long as it is black, which is already painful in a place as hot as this), I just wanted someone I could share my love of gothic literature/movies/music with, that's all.
