Why does nobody use it?

what is it?

Rower

never heard of it

Serious question Jow Forums.

Rowing works your legs and upper body pulling muscles, right? And burpees with push ups work your legs and pushing muscles. So wouldn't those combined be a pretty good all-around way to do cardio? Maybe do intervals based on burpees one day, do the same based on rowing the next?

Use the fuck out of mine. 2200m in

sounds like crossfit

This .

I do 2000m sprint and various interval workouts. Rowing will absolutely obliterate you.

It’s the final boss of HIIT.
Nobody uses it because it’s hard to use correctly and hurts either way.

Why does the normies not know this? seems like people are scared of the rowing machine

Rowing has a higher barrier to entry. It is difficult to get quality instruction - most people just know. Whereas, running and cycling are more intuitive and natural sports. Anyone glcan shoot a basketball or buy a pair of running shoes. Rowing is a complex motion and sitting on the erg is not fun for everyone.

If only they knew how great it really is...

Is it really that complex? I watched about an hours worth of YouTube tuts and make use of it just fine. Certainly not Olympic quality though.

If you want to get actually good at it, you need to practice technique with a mirror for a few minutes before every time you use it. You can look up technique drills on youtube. The better your technique is, the more calories you burn.

That said, it is AMAZING for cardio.

Develops back, butt, abs, and legs. I can burn 400 calories in 20 minutes on this thing. Helps to get the V taper because of how it works the middle and upper back.

But it is pretty fucking hard.

My advice is do only 20 minutes at a time, and use the 500 meter splits. Try and get slightly faster every time. If you can hold under 2:00 splits for 20 minutes, you are /fit.

i think ive seen people using it at my gym like 3 times

the elipticals and treadmills on the other hand...

I'm a big oaf and not coordinated enough to use it. It's the "pat your head and rub your tummy" of exercise machines.

It's not hard to pull on the handle decently hard, but bad form can cause injuries and it's more difficult to learn than form for any common lift.

People at my gym actually use it quite a bit. I guess they realize how based it is.

Personally it's my favorite cardio, but still need to work on my form

I don't really know about using the ergs for Jow Forumsness but technique comes pretty fast on the water where a mistake ends up with you catching a crab and ending up in the drink. All the erg-dominant guys had impressive splits but dogshit on-water performance (hard to get feedback on whether or not your slide is balanced).

Rower? I’ve never even met her!

thanks for the guide, I have the form down but dunno what the fuck to actually do exercise wise.

>strength
>cardio
in one big package

why not just row a dumbell?

i only use it for warming up.

Post 2k

I spend a few minutes on this every time I go to the gym before lifting. It's a brilliant workout for your entire body.

this
>under 2:00 for 20 min
I do 90+ min under 2:00 as recovery/light cardio workout. Good advice though
t. world class rower
hey Damu, I had no idea you were interested in rowing
hodling my linkies even firmer now

I used to use this thing religiously when i was a fat fucker because i couldnt run, never touch them now

It's used at my college gym a lot. Probably not many crew/rowers outside of universities

is it good for weight loss?

God-tier cardio

But don't be an idiot and just crank the damper 10; google "drag factor" and set it properly

I don't use the one at my gym. those things are drier than hillary clintons vag. they scream when you pull on it. I have one at home that glides, that i keep clean and lube with oil. BEST FUCKING EARLY MORNING FASTED CARDIO, besides a good old fashioned 2.5 mile run

Its because people have no idea how to actually use them. I like rowing, but my gym has 3 worn down old row machines that no matter the setting has no resistance at all. Seems to be a common theme with old worn row machines that they no longer have any resistance. But i guess there is no point in buying nice new row machines when no one uses them.

It provides a great calorie burn in a low-impact way that won't fuck up your joints in the way running might if you're a fat sack

Use good form: push legs first, then pull arms, don't round your lower back but hinge instead ... check YouTube for form tips

It’s a great warm up machine

I bought one, on a whim, about 4 years ago meaning to use it to actually bring my much neglected cardio up to speed.

Well, it's taken a long fucking time but I've finally started using it in earnest rowing a 5k, five days a week after lifting for some cardio.
I'm slow as fuck though. I've put some work into my technique, it's better than when I started for sure, but I struggle to even break 2.00 split time.
Probably has something to do with being 5'7 but I'm sure also a lot to do with my overall cardio level.

It's getting better though. The first week was horrible. 5k seems like a long fucking distance. Getting closer to my 20 min goal time and then hopefully I can bring it down even further.

We’ve got two at my gym they’re always in use

I used to use it a lot but I changed to the Stairmaster

sometimes do 2k in 8 mins, should really do it more often

>tfw leave ass sweat on the seat

Piękne XD

I used to do crew and had to use these fucking things all the time.

Main problem no one uses it is because of the actual technique involved in order to use it correctly.

cardiobunnies btfo

My best 2k is 7:04 (on a concept 2). Goal is to get

Who are you?

that's exactly what crossfit fags do.
legit rowers use it to, you guessed it, row. just row.
from long ass 4X(20') to the dreaded 2k test and everything in between. hell, even do like 3km easy as warmup before weight training. but not like crossfit.
also, crossfiters tend to have shit technique.

then don't put that shit on 10 unless you're doing power strokes/ race starts fag.

how to avoid shoe straps loosening? i feel like i have to re-tighten them all the time

everyone does. even world class rowers will say their stroke isn't perfect. there's ALWAYS something to improve on.

omg. someone knows. it's a miracle

Replace them, they're worn out. Or, double the free end back through the buckle.

so do most rowers before any strength training.

the machines are in my gym so i'll try the doubling thing. thanks

Based

dude. my old coach is 5'7 (170cm) and has a sub 6'40'' 2k at like 65kg bodyweight. he's a fucking beast.
work at it. your goals are very achievable.

Shit, that's pretty fucking quick. Now that I can't use my height as a crutch I guess I'll have to put some more work in.

What do you think about rowing strapless as a newbie to help improve my stroke?

rowing is the most noble and THE defacto anglo sport, much more so than any olympic disciplines let alone god forbid soccer or rugby

I'm no expert, but that sounds completely counter-productive?

The straps are meant to keep your explosive leg lockouts in check.

If you weren't strapped in, would you not just blast off the back of the machine while clinging the handle near your chin?

Apparently not. Apparently, if your stroke is good and you explode out of the catch with enough power you create enough resistance to stop yourself from pulling your feet out.

Like if you need straps to tether you in it's because you're locking out the legs too late in the stroke and then all the rest of your energy is basically you just pulling yourself off the machine and not exerting anymore force on the chain.
Rowing strapless teaches you how to deliver all of your power to the chain and wheel instead of wasting it which is what causes your feet to come off of the footplate.
That's what I've read anyway. A lot of people seem to swear by it. I think I'll try it because I know I'm losing a lot of power in my stroke and having a big problem with the straps loosening and my feet pulling off the plate every time.

But I do. Thankfully nobody else has realized how based this machine is at my gym.

Yeah again I don't have enough experience to comment. Applying that thinking to my stroke would mean it's shit, because I definitely would need the straps, I have way too much momentum coming out of the catch.

When I get back into it I'll look more into this technique, maybe there's something to it.

There's nothing wrong with combining disciplines to be a more rounded individual. Crossfit fags ruin it by ditching discipline to chase the clock.

I use the rower to warm up. Like 3 mins of it and im warmed up to do stuff. Its an okay machine. People look at me like im a retard when i use it. But the6 dont know that i actually am retarded

if you want a quick warm up just you the thot machine aka stairmaster

>the your gym will never have a sailing ergometer.

rower means I love you in dinosaur xD

Ahem, *tfw

I was literally the only person I knew that used this, then one of the straps broke so now It's just sitting there :~(

In my gym it is right bellow the the squat rack loaded plates, everytime I see a qt3.14 hop in I try real my best not to fail a rep and scare her.

It's pretty easy to use with no straps. Instead of trying to pretend you're 'jumping' just think about pulling so you keep constant tension on the chain.
Legs bend, then abs bend, then arms pull at end of stroke.

Thanks user, yeah I really gotta work on my form. I didn't know you weren't supposed to pull yourself back with your feet but it makes more sense lol

I see people use the ones in my gym sometimes. I also make sure to hit it up at least once a week. 2 km after back day, maybe another 2 km after legs. Sometimes I come into the gym just to work abs and follow it with a 5 k on the rowing machine. Shit is fucking brutal. Way more difficult than running or cycling.

My local YMCA just bought one of these, but I have no idea what the fuck it's for.

My gym just rearranged a bunch of shit to make room for this fucking thing.

Who wants to guess what this magical device is?

Don't answer if you already know.

Attached: fucking shit machine.png (334x334, 49K)

I always set mine at 10 because I have no idea how this shit works and I want to look as manly as possible. If I'm a 145 lb 29-year-old male with a (relatively) strong back and a ~8:15 2 km time, what tension should I set my machine at?

I'm guessing you squat down and pull the handles as you go, which would simulate...playing with one of those big parachutes you used to use in gym class as a kid?

First you should stop being a manlet.

dad bod machine

I only set the resistance to 10 and stick to 100 calories worth, usually takes 15min due to rests every 4-5min with 32s/m at about 700-900 cal/hr

Is that good? I never count meters

stationary unicycle?

You're on the right track but no.

Gotta git dem clown-gainz!

Keep guessing.

Thred ded, thanks for playing.

It's an ergonomic skiing machine.

Absolute wank.

kek

More options>drag factor>130

Resistance to 10 is a meme. Watch a video on drag factor. Also 32spm is pretty high. Shoot for 26-27 with a more powerful stroke.

I'd like to see this big motherfucker's 2k

former crew member here,
this is fucking great but focus on form first. Yeah this means taking some time and going really slow -like 15-20 strokes a minute slow- to get decent on form but after that any workout will be 10x better.

BLOAT wins again

Attached: 1515583785585.jpg (664x463, 57K)

So you do it before workouts? What setting resistance should I set it to? like the other guy I set it to 10 but it also seems weird to have so many other settings.

Got a video you recc to watch for technique?

Onions

I want to see an erg that can withstand this big motherfucker's 2k.

kek

It's for rehab. I tore my bicep and used this a bunch

between 5 and 6, 6 or between 6 and 7. depends on the machine (was it used before, at what drag, how much dust it collected and a billion other factors) but it should put you in the 100-120 drag factor, the one rowers use.

120 fag

they would have to make a brand new erg from scratch with very specific materials and specs so brian shaw can use it without have to stake plates under. the time and money put in to it probably wouldn't be worth it. plus, don't forget that strongmen known for being extremely strong in short bursts so a max watts test or a 100m test would be optimal, a 2k not so much.
no doubt it would be entertaining tho.

incline bicep curl station

Rowing strapless is a good drill, my coaches explained to me that you should be able to row strapless.

because none of you care about actual fitness

this is thee best machine to get fit and all of you fags never use it or have no idea about it, its cringe.

this machine is a micro aggression

>It's an ergonomic skiing machine.
how does that even work
