I'm a vegetarian of 15-20 years, I'll try transitioning slowly.

I'll still eat cheese once, when having pizza or pasta, but otherwise I don't really enjoy cheese anymore, and milk I can also live without.

Meanwhile, I love all legumes.

France, Australia, Switzerland and Israel, 4 out of the top 5 countries with the lowest rates of heart disease have relatively high meat consumption per capita.

I’ve been a vegan for a while now and have made some pretty good gains. I put on about 20lbs in roughly a year and 3 months and have cut ~2% of my body fat in the process.
Lentils are great. 1 cup is like 50 grams of protein. Eat them with brown rice to meet this amino acid requirements for a complete protein.
Beans are your friend. They can make you fart but black beans and garbanzos have god-tier protein levels.
Try to avoid processed onions, like tofu or onions milk or onions protein. Instead, try to find some good pea protein if you’re into protein powder.
Oats and peanut butter in smoothies are great for bulking, and tasty when you add a frozen banana and some protein powder.
Don’t neglect your veggies at all. Even though your diet will be 100% plants, you still need all the nutrients you can get. Spinach, kale, carrots, lettuce, beets, potatoes, corn, avocados, you name it are all super important because of their vitamin content.
Supplement b12. You can’t get everything from a vegan diet.
If you’re concerned about calcium intake for them strong bones and musclular contractions drink almond milk. It has way more calcium than dairy milk.
Invest in a good blender because smoothies are a good way to get everything you need. If you don’t have the money or don’t like smoothies, just try to eat a diverse amount of food.
Fruit is fucking great. It doesn’t fuck with your blood sugar (am diabetic I would know this) and doesn’t make you fat. I eat a big bowl of fruit along with my breakfast before a workout. Helps with any cramping and gives you plenty of energy.
Nuts are a great source of omega 3’s, protein and fat.
Cook with olive oil.

vegan here for almost a year, was vegetarian for 10 years before than slowly transitioning.

the animal rights portion of the movement is cool and all, but I really did it for health. I've never been more healthy and have always focused hard on cardio, but in the past 6 months iv'e picked up weight lifting and have made great gains. it's an amazing life style and I can't wait in a year or two and see how far my body has come with my new weight lifting regimen.

anyone curious about a vegan diet, I implore you to try it out, even for a little while. you'll blow people out of the water in the gym with your fast recovery and your body will all around feel great.

No actual data given, but the article you cite also makes a point of the many US states with high saturated fat diets and resulting high rates of heart disease. France has been studied a lot due to the "french paradox" which has been found to be due to a few misleading factors, including misreporting by french physicians and the time difference between when the French began eating more fat and the amount of time it takes for heart disease to develop.

Honestly? Nuts, seeds and nutbutters mostly. Bulkpowders has these amazing hazelnut and almond nutbutters with dark chocolate that taste like Nutella, so I use that to bulk up. Also avocados, shredded coconuts, tahini and the like. There are some very nutritious high caloric vegan foods, but they are also easily avoided, hence the diet is great for cutting but still good for bulking.
