/fast/ #228 - Black Hole of Hunger Edition

FAQ
>What is /fast/?
Fast is a thread for the discussion of intermittent fasting, fasting, water fasting, dry fasting.

>What’s the difference between intermittent fasting, water fasting, dry fasting, etc.?
>Intermittent fasting: Fasting for a certain amount of time with a short eating window. 16:8 (16 hours fasting, 8 hour eating window) is the bare minimum.
>Water fasting: Fasting with only water.
>Dry fasting: Fasting with no water. Dangerous, use with caution.

>Why should I fast?

Read all of these, they might answer some other questions you may want to ask.

>Can I fast if I have ___?
See your doctor before fasting if you:
>Have any sort of chronic illness
Don’t fast if you:
>Have type 1 diabetes
>Are malnourished/severely underweight
>Are pregnant
>Are breastfeeding

>How do I safely do an extended fast (approx. 4-5+ days)

>2000mg of sodium (preferably Himalayan Pink Salt) max
>4700mg of saltless potassium max
Mix these in a liter of water and sip it throughout the day. The apple cider vinegar and lemon are optional.
You can also do this if you feel lightheaded, weak, dizzy, nauseous, etc., on shorter water fasts. Don’t do this while intermittent fasting.

>Won’t I go into starvation mode?
No. It only occurs at extremely low body fat (4% or less).

>Will (something with calories) break my fast?
Yes.

>Can I drink coffee, tea, and diet soda? Or anything with artificial sweeteners?
Artificial sweeteners and diet soda are bad for you and may fuck up your fast. Zero calorie black coffee and tea are generally considered to be fine.

>Do I need a multivitamin?
Not really, since the fat you are burning contains most of the vitamins you need.

did a 24 yesterday, broke it by eating some pizza and I'm almost at 24 again. planning to do at least 48 and see how I feel after that

Remember that the benefits of fasting are incremental, the more you do it the easier it becomes.

If you can get up fasting in 5 day blocks before breaking your fast (eating at ketogenic calorie maintenance) that will be more than enough to lose a fuckton of weight over an extended period.

psmf dude. Decided to only do a 1 week break. restarted the psmf thursday. almost hitting the 20lbs lost mark. feels good.

Is there anyone here who'd like an accountability buddy? I pretty much hit my goal weight last month but since then I've been consistently making horrible diet choices and regained probably 8lbs. I have a pt test for my job at the end of the month and I'd like someone to handhold me.

>I have a pt test for my job at the end of the month
What sort of job requires a pt test?

I've only heard of that for cops and military.

Mite b cool, I've tired getting one on the facebook snakediet group but dudes get ignored (unless they post crazy results) and the only people that get motivators / accountability buddies are chicks, who get them in minutes

Cool man! I made a discord if you want to jump in and chat.

Cole said in a video that plain water fasting wont trigger autophagy because "your body has to digest the water".
What is this shit?

>your body has to digest the water
Literally retard level stupidity.

I know right? I agree with the guy most of the time but then he has these moments of pure retardedness.

If anyone else wants to join/be held accountible, please do!

So I have been fasting intermittently 8:16 for about a month now. Cheated about once or twice per week. Last week was the first week I didn't have a cheat day and also last Friday and Sunday I only ate one meal on each day, but in the same quantity I would normally eat during my feeding window. What I noticed is that during the my first week without cheat days I started to wake up earlier with each day despite going to bed at around the same time. Does anyone else have similar experiences with Intermittent Fasting that resulted in needing less sleep?

HOW TO GET OUT OF PLATEAU

Attached: 1520484288970_cleaned_up.png (1156x862, 639K)

That's good but you can do better man. I'm not trying to discourage but you still have so much fat you could just start doing one meal a week or longer fasts.

Stop eating fatty.

Fasting per say does affect sleep patterns with those on water / dry fasting reporting the worst levels of insomnia, so what you say about IF doesn't surprise me.

My sleep levels have dropped from 8 hours a night on average to about 5-6 hours per night since I started fasting 8 months ago.

I don't feel tired because of it though, I think it is because ketosis keeps energy levels pretty stable.

>HOW TO GET OUT OF PLATEAU

Depends upon the type of fasting you are doing, the level of body fat and how long you have plateaued.

YOU DISGUSTING NIGGER. IM ON 400C OMAD DIET.

400C OMAD SINCE 2 WEEKS.

PLATAEUD SINCE 4 DAYS

BODY FAT AROUND 40

>Orexin is a neuropeptide that does two important things. One it keeps you awake, two it increases your appetite if you don’t eat. As long as you don’t eat, orexin levels in the brain spike, keeping you awake increasing mental energy due to among other things, increased dopamine levels in the brain.

When you sleep, your brain uses a melatonin system to help put you to sleep. The interesting thing is the orexin system and melatonin system in the brain interact. If orexin levels are really high during the day, and you go to sleep, melatonin levels will also be really high at night, causing you to sleep deeper than normal.

So fasting exposes you to higher orexin levels during the day, increasing energy, which in turn exposes you to more melatonin at night, causing your sleep to be deeper. Since depth of sleep is more important than length of sleep, you now need less sleep.

I found this online while looking for an answer, but then again, its just a comment reply on Quora so I am not sure how valid it really is, but it is probably the explanation that makes the most sense to me. I wonder if there is any truth to it though.

>I found this online while looking for an answer, but then again, its just a comment reply on Quora so I am not sure how valid it really is

Sounds reasonable, but then I am only a layman, not an endocrinologist.

Suggesting that melatonin levels are part of the reason does gel with my understanding of melatonin, which I've used previously to deal with jet lag on my Europe -> Asia trips.

Sounds like water retention.

leangains.com/how-to-deal-with-water-retention-part-one/

Try limit your water intake to 1 litre per day (or less if you can manage it).

Alternately try just water fasting with zero calories per day for a while. See how you get on.

Exercise.
>Wake up 1 hour earlier and just walk for that hour
>Any time you aren't doing something... walk
>Lift, low weight many reps

Stop playing video games, stop sitting in front of Jow Forums for hours and spend all of that time walking.

Download audio books and listen while doing so.

6.5 day hard dryfast completed. originally i wanted to go for a new record of 9 days and maybe break the double digits. but i only slept 2-3 hours last night and had cramp in my feet, ankle and knees. plus weird feeling in my heart or lung. that night was way harder then anything during the 8 day dryfast, i also took a pretty big solid completely black dump this morning.
1 decided to transition into a water fast but ended up with a cheat day.
though my cheat days consists of walking around town and buying 1 or 2 pieces of fruit in each store. that said i am at 1.5 kg of fruits already with a calorie count of 1k. i am probably gonna just eat a cabbage burger with onion and sweet paprika and 300g of chicken livers.
i am looking at recipes, does anyone have a favorite way to prepare them?
so i will probably get to 2500 cals today and then start water fasting tomorrow.

i also look at it this way. if i can stand eating so soon (i ate cucumbers like 10 minutes after downing coconut water and baking soda and fruit like 30 minutes after) i can probably start going to the gym tomorrow.

next goal is to waterfast until i reach 62 kg again, because i will probably weigh at least 65 tomorrow. and then try to stay in a fed state around 62 kg, then readjust how i look and set new goals. either going to 60kg or i can finally start a real bulk.

my birthday is on 1 august and i really want 10% or single digits bodyfat. is there anyone here that wants to take a gander at my current bodyfat% i think i am probably still above 13% and maybe even 15% still.

Attached: 7 day dryfast blacked.jpg (1944x3032, 1.1M)

how can i identify if im fasting correctly or i'm just into starvation

i'm stupid i should have read the general

Do you have 4% body fat or less?

If you don't then you are not fasting yourself into starvation...

What kind of fast were you doing? I lost 30 lbs starting at 200lbs first month just eating every 3-4 days, are you doing something to break out of Ketosis like chewing gum or something?

Quick question my mans, wont 5 days without eating a gram of protein/food mean an amazing loss in muscle mass?

I've read up on fasting and all that, but out of sheer logic that would happen, or am I wrong?

protein sparing modified fast (psmf)

>wont 5 days without eating a gram of protein/food mean an amazing loss in muscle mass?

No.

idmprogram.com/fasting-and-muscle-mass-fasting-part-14/

>I've read up on fasting and all that, but out of sheer logic that would happen, or am I wrong?
I lost 5 pounds muscle in a month fasting (lost a lot more in fat though), but I also fucked myself by doing max weight training. Switching to low weight high rep training for this month and seeing how it goes.

Hey /fast/, im new to fasting and i wanted to ask. When you fast for 3-7 days straight and then eat healthy food, wont you get yoyo effect and gain the weight back? Isnt fasting kinda pointless due to yoyo effect? Also may i do fasting and no excercisse and expect to loose weight?

you fast, lose a ton of weight, then fix your habits and diet and you fix it for life

Just try it faggot

Here's my progress after one month of 3-6 day fasts, ready to start my 2nd month fast after a weekend of cheat meals

Attached: 1mo.jpg (746x402, 36K)

Does using toothpaste break your fast? My mouth feels disgusting right now, and I really want to brush my teeth to fix that.

Sup /fast/, this is my 3 month update. I've been fasting 5-6 days per week and eating keto on refeed days. more recently doing 6 days a week, which seems to keep things consistently moving forward.

This last week, I also drank lotsa coke zero and other aspartame sweetened 0 cal drinks and did not see any issue with the weight loss.

Attached: chart.png (1937x757, 60K)

I wasn't sure of this because it tastes sweet, but you can also create some paste with baking soda, just add some water, mix and you will get some to wash your teeth

is fasting 3 days or less even worth it for fat loss?

You'd have to be pretty strict with your refeeds to stay in ketosis

Not really
But it does require some optimization

yeah, i wouldnt be in ketosis for the majority of the fast, but unless i binge after im still in a hefty deficit, so shouldnt CICO still apply?

yes very much so. you will on a 10k cal deficit every week. as opposed to 3500 for a save cut or 7000 for a aggressive cut.

and if you eat below maintenance on feeding days you will lose even more. and if you eat keto it will make your body pretty fat adapted during your fasting days.

is a protein sparing fast during the week and a keto refeed with maintenance calories on the weekends sustainable for cutting 20 pounds or so?

Doing a 2 day dry fast to make the following extended water fast easier. Just passed day 1 but man this is torture, I cant stop thinking about water. Wish I could just sleep away the day but cant so I'll need you guys to pass the time with

anything is fucking sustainable as long as you get your minerals and are above 8% bf

Do you think it's okay for a grown ass man to be jump roping or will my neighbors think I'm a fag

yes

you should try actually fasting

holy fuck why is a cold shower so fucking cold. did i actually lose enough body fat to notice that or is there some other trickery going on.
i was just taking my normal cold shower because its so hot. and suddenly it felt like freezing water in comparison.

it's all in your head lad

could be. but the water definitely was a fuckton colder then i am used to

Good looking out.
Thanks man

Just broke a 20 hour fast, feels good

now do 40 hours

I don't want to lose all my muscle

I have like 15-20 pounds left to lose until I'm super lean. I don't know if I should be doing 48s, 72s, or going as long as I can. I'd like to keep lifting while I drop the last bit of fat.

dont lift while fasting. period.

thats retarded

Wrong and stupid brainlet
Dont give advice

i'm going to try doing OMAD for a while while im on ostarine, then just go to a straight long fast.

how would fasting with cold therapy work? i've been thinking of attempting cole's method while doing the wim hof program. it'd be a ten week venture.

Attached: Wim-Hof-1140x500.jpg (1140x500, 93K)

Who here is drinking their piss and bathing in it like the snek man?

Do real fasts. You don't have a whole lot of muscle mass anyway, you fatass.

I will be starting 4th day of fasting after waking up tomorrow and I was wondering if it's a good time to jump on keto and test it for 5 days? (going on holiday after)

>IM ON 400C OMAD DIET.
STOP. EATING. FATTY.

So while the general post says you don't need a multivitamin I keep seeing differing opinions.

Does a multivitamin contain calories? I would assume most are around 5-10 due to the dissolving capsule or shell it has even though most bottles don't show that.
I'm on day 2 of a fast and wanting to go at least a week but if possible go longer, at what point should I start drinking potassium + sodium + magnesium to keep myself from going light headed? I'm going to go through at least 1 gallon of water a day and do not want to only drink the snake juice due to fear of having too much sodium/magnesium.

Right now i'm on a holiday at my company in the sense that I have 30 days where I don't have to work and can literally sit around the house all day other than checking emails. Should I still lift weights heavy, or shrink it down to lower rep/weights until I am adjusted to the fast (day 4-5).

Do you guys do cardio while fasting? And final question can boomers (i'm 29) safely fast extended periods? I'm considering fasting for the loose skin and overall desire to get away from food being in control of my life.

Starting Weight 5 months ago: 278
Weight on day 2 of fast: 234
I've just been tracking my macros loosely until about a month ago where I lost 20 lbs easily cause I finally dialed in my diet.

Attached: 1531064702373.jpg (749x800, 166K)

its ok but your neighbors will think you are a fag. Unless you get fit. Then nobody will care what you do.

This.
That dude has about 150 lbm. What muscle does he think he is actually sparing?

Keto is a meme. It doesn't help you lose weight any faster when fasting.

Why would you fuck your metabolism up like that? You either fast or do not fast. The whole point is to keep your insulin spikes to a minimum to stop fat storage. Cutting calories just fucks your metabolism up.

How do I nicely comeback into normal eating then? Would I just eat 2.5k calories as I normally would?

>normal eating
You mean like eating at maintenance? Or you mean like eating again after a fast?

>eat 2500 calories
Yes, I would eat that much. 4-6 days isn't really going to fuck you up. Just eat a little to start out. Then slowly build up from there. So do not eat a whole pizza after you end your fast. Just eat a little bit.

maintenance since I've just finished my bulk with that 3 day fast.

Congrats bro!!

Blending all my veggies into a smoothie really helps with OMAD. Chewing carrots and bell peppers always took way too long. I just swish every gulp through my mouth a bit to mix it with saliva.

Should I do OMAD on a 500 cal deficit throughout the week and fast on sunday, or eat OMAD above maintenance on lifting days and fast on rest days as well? I'm at about 18-19% bf and want to get down to 10-12% while still enjoying those sweet noobgains.

how much would i lose in a 24hr fast? 36hr?

FAST FOOD??

YOU AIN'T SUPPOSED TO EAT WHILE YOU'RE FASTING DUMDUM.

- Sideofmcgee

Depends on how much you currently weigh now and it would mostly be water weight you dumb nigger

240ish lbs

then see

3500 calories equal a pound of fat iirc. There's of course water weight to consider as well. A 24h fast will burn some fat but will be barely noticable. Do them consistently several times a week and you will lose weight. Do longer fasts and you will lose weight faster. There is no faster way to lose weight than not eating aside from liposuction or amputation.

>Dude could use all the cash he can make.
Dive deeper into his vids. He used to be a high roller, owned a GTR, had a big house and so on.
Now he's fully against the system and quite happy with it.

I did PSMF before there was enough info on water/dry/snake fasting. Drop it (I bet you dont even take enough EC) and move onto snake juice if you're going to the gym or snake/dry if you don't train. It's better for overall health, not just fat loss.

what is psmf? sorry dude but your progress sucks. from your graphs I'm understanding that are doing calorie restriction. you ll fuck up your metabolism and your body will consume the muscles before your day due to fucking insulin

fasted lifting is GOAT

he's just using "PSMF" as a way to maintain his food addiction

it's 'protein sparing modified fasting'. essentially he just eats at a severe caloric deficit and calls it fasting. it's retarded.

Can I fast to get rid of a parasite infection? I want to starve out my giardia

Did someone from Jow Forums write the wikipedia page for PSMF? I've read about this in /fast/ threads and the links contained within so I was already aware, but I've never seen this information posted in other places online, especially wikipedia, since I thought burning fat and not muscle on a fast was only relatively recently suggested. I notice it doesn't have a citation.

Attached: Capture.png (1506x122, 23K)

PSMF is a meme stop eating fatty

I've been doing my first fast and it's been three days so far. The results aren't as exciting as I thought it would be compared to what I've seen others getting. I've only lost two pounds in this time despite being obese. I don't get how others drop so much despite weighing less unless they aren't getting any salt.

I'm not on PSMF m8, I just water-fast and do cardio and if anything I'm below a healthy weight right now for my height. I was just surprised to see Jow Forums rhetoric posted on wikipedia

I swear anyone that posts in these threads never posts their god damn weight or height or anything that could be considered useful for discussion

Most of what I see are people dry fasting for 3 or so days and then water fasting for a few days more.
Is there any benefit to doing windows of dry fasting during a water fast? Like a 20:4 where you drink water for a bit before, during, and after a workout.
Also, will the saliva production from chewing mastic gum negate a dry fast?

Just finished my first fast attempt. Made it to 36 hours. Broke it with some chicken, carrots, celery, and a banana. I'll try to get to 48 hours next time.

There isn't a single system in your body that doesn't benefit from being adequately hydrated, and doesn't suffer from being dehydrated. Stop dry fasting you fucking idiot.
The only reason this isn't considered a fad diet is you guys made a general for it so the fad can never die.
Fasting is fine, not drinking water will shorten your life span.

is there any good proof of fasting being muscle-sparing besides the shit on Jason Fung's website?

Besides Jason and Snakeman saying fasting is almost perfectly muscle-sparing, is there any more actual proof?

Professional bodybuilders don't fast to cut weight, they all just lower calories on their meals and they actually have incentive to cut as quickly as possible and keeping their muscle.
