Reason for Discord's popularity is normie "I want to be admin" behaviour. The same self-centred attitude that gave us abusive GMod DarkRP kid admins, now without any entrance fee in the form of server maintenance.
It is a pretty good platform communication-wise, and as long as you talk about relatively benign things and live in a country with no actively enforced hate-speech laws, you're good.
I use TeamSpeak most of the time though.

It is open source which means that they wouldn't have to have as many staff I don't think (Unlike discord) I don't know heaps and heaps about it, just some basic stuff. If you want to know more Jow Forums has threads about this software like every hour or so, I do recommend it, its pretty smooth and a discord clone that doesn't thieve your fucking data (I'm real private). The only thing that kinda bugs me, is the display is white and not discord black/dark color, so literally nothing.
