Boring as shit, it's so formulaic and soul-suckingly uncreative. If I can be hyperbolic for a moment, GDP is everything that is wrong with how our society sees sex.

It's nice in theory to have one number that measures the overall size of the economy, but it seems too easily gamed and doesn't necessarily correspond all that well with how people are actually doing - especially in countries with a large informal sector.

It's a good not-too-derivative baseline though. It gives you a nice broad view of how much the country outputs as a single entity without getting into the more complicated human aspect

It's not uncommon for some countries include illegal income such as drug and arms traffic into their GDP calculations.

Is that a bad thing though? They are producing a product and profiting from it.
Money isn't a moral or ethical standard, so it shouldn't how you make it (from an economic view)

I don't know, I'm not an economician. I imagine it's unfair practice since it's illegal and it produces an inflated GDP in the end and it affects their credit rating positively when it shouldn't.

Why does it really matter though? Is it to deduce efficiency of the population or investment like GDP per capita or something? I prefer a nationally centered economy that is more concerned with wealth and quality of life as opposed to simply how much the country puts out in goods or services.

Yeah a country might be selling slaves, drugs, or turning their entire populace into a huge sweat shop, but if that makes them a ton of money, that will show up in GDP.
That will tell us a lot about the human condition, and that maybe ethics can have certain drawbacks

Well international credit ratings are based on more than GDP.
But also, if you're rating countries by their ability to pay you back, do you really care what they use to make their money? As long as they can pay up it's all good

Well that's true, but arent't illicit gains extremely volatile? I guess that plays a part in their credit rating. Wouldn't it become a matter of trust and isn't money lending based on trust?

I really couldn't tell you why it's a bad thing to include illegal shit in GDP as I'm not versed in economics. It just seems shitty and scummy and I wouldn't trust the GDP numbers to rate countries.

Yeah, I would imagine those sorts of gains are very volatile, but that's part of the reason GDP isn't the only stat used for the overall credit score. I doubt it plays a part in anything regarding long-term investment, but probably does a great deal for short term loans
