Because they very rarely leave without locking up unless it's a situation I'm okay with, like I'm home during the day and they went to go do laundry or something. But when they go to work and do it I always lock it behind them. Doesn't stop them from just unlocking it, though.

Have you actually thought about replacing the lock with one that autolocks? The kind that locks after 3 seconds or so when closed. As dumb as it sounds it'll solve all your problems and might not be that expensive if you all chip in. Not sure if you're allowed to do that in your building though.
