yeah, most genuine fans are just there to sit back and enjoy.
the trouble is when the riff-raff show up. there'll always be that one 30+ year old in the crowd causing trouble just for the sake of it (at least that's the case with my scene, anyway). it just shits me to tears when you've paid good money for a show, only then to put up with idiots being idiots.

You're right. People often compare it to opera in this sense. If you cant 'comprehend' it, start with less extreme stuff. If you are not into metal, I'd say liston to a bit of black sabbath, then thrash, then melodeath, death and then some more accessible black metal like Burzum. Also atmoshperic bm is probably a lot more easy to listen to and enjoy than second wave norwegian type bm or DSBM for example.
