My starter was bulba if I remember correctly. Grass type has type advantage over water as well as ground.
Water and fire type are weak against most commonly faced opponents.

Bulbasaur was actually the best choice though. There are great replacements for both blastoise and charizard but no great ones for venosaur.

I went with bulbasaur on red. First team I beat the game with wound up being Venusaur, Machoke, Golduck, Pidgeot, Arcanine, and Chansey.
