Get a club membership to any food outlets that sell in bulk in your area, places like coscto or Sam's club. If you are comfortable eating the same food every day you can minimize costs by buying in bulk.

If you essentially starve yourself (going way, way below 500 deficit or literally starving yourself) for a long time, yes, your body will turn energy to fat. The opposite is also true, though. If you overeat for a week and then start working out hard you can lose weight faster.

What do you normally eat? The idea is you buy dry and frozen foods that last the month, and they generally have a steep cost decrease since you are buying in bulk. You end up saving if you buy the months food in advance. A 10lb bag of rice can run you less than 10 dollars ajd it will likely last you 6 months or more if you're the only one eating it

You would likely see a change just by switching to traditionally cooked meals. Ultimately you'll want to start tracking but switching to meals consisting of lean meat, veggies, and a sensible amount of carbs without sauce or excessive cooking oils will likely hit the mark if your alternative is fast food. This is all stuff you can get fairly cheap at the grocery store. Might not hit those same pleasure centers as fast food does but you'll live longer.

You decide what you eat. Dont make some bs excuse about your family only cooking/buying garbage. Count calories to the best of your abilities and learn portions. You can probably get away with doing some calisthenics in your room for a while until you find a job to support yourself.

I have several people in my friends group that ive known since HS who are in their early to mid 20's who are literally NEET and dont care to change it. Please avoid being these fools and do better. Especially for somebody like yourself, the mental gains of regularly working out will be as important as the physical gains. And you can also go running, biking, hiking, etc.

Start with gradual steps. Start to cut back on desserts, cut back on snacks. If you drink alcohol, cut back on that too. And soda, condiments, etc. are easy to cut. Gradually start eating more veggies. Canned/frozen is fine if you can't get enough fresh. Make your diet a little healthier every week instead of trying to change too much too fast. People who do that often end up relapsing after a few weeks.
What body type are you? Are you a fatty who needs to lose weight, or a skelly who needs to gain muscle, or just a lazy NEET who needs to be more active?

The problem is your body will want to slow down if you eat too few calories.
Becoming akin to a sloth, you'll burn fewer calories and gain weight because now you're eating more calories than your body is burning.

In reality if you eat less than 1k calories a day. You will always lose weight.
It's literally impossible not to as just basic metabolism to keep you alive burns quite a few hundred calories.
However this isn't healthy.
You maintain a lifestyle and eat a little bit less than that lifestyle demands.
