Humans are naturally polygamous. Given freedom to organise ourselves based on our instincts, a minority of men will get all the women, and the majority will get none.
That's just nature. Women are the selectors, males are the competitors. There's little reason for a male gender to exist beyond constantly fighting among themselves to prove that they have the best genes.
Enforcing monogamy ensures that each man has one woman (provided he contributes to society), making life a lot less stressful for most men, while women still get to have children and raise them as normal. Whether that's worth fundamentally restricting the rights of women is up for you to decide.

Women in history were never really in that position to select their mates, but that was in stuff like middle ages were marrige was done for other reasons than love.

What happens is that while men are born and die out alone to because they didnt have the right genes. Women with bad traits will still most likely reproduce and bring more males to die out alone.
As example, if a woman is short, its not seen as unatractive and will not impact their chances of finding a partner. If a male is short then he will look inferior to other males and will not find a partner as easily.
