I wear gloves at the gym. I'm an RN and I work with feces, urine and blood. I can't risk having cuts on my hand from calous's or so on.

If doing any exercise is legitimately painful, you are gripping the bar wrong. I still get some calluses, but my hands don't hurt from anything except deadlifts and shrugs and it's very minor pain.
