I’ve done fucked up here guys. Got myself one of them hernias. It’s right in my groin where the thigh meets the torso and It hurts like a bitch so I can’t squat/deadlift/do anything ab related. Which is all I’ve done for the past 2 years of my life.

Is surgery my only option? Can people just push through the pain and squat with hernias?

I’m not exactly sure what I got the hernia specifically from. But before last month, I was squatting 3-4 days a week and deadlifting 2x a week. Plus a lot of running and ab work.

I don't even train abs so I can't really say, but it seems like you train abs a lot which might have been one of the causes. Squatting 3-4 days is a lot imo which already uses core muscles and on top of that even more ab work.

I'm not OP, I was just mentioning how I thought that after reading how abdominal pressure is what causes it. Maybe muscles which hold that tissue together you may be better off was my logic

It didn’t just come out one day. I guess it was a progression style thing. At first it felt like I pulled my groin, so I just pushed through the pain and still worked out. Which kind of worked, once you do like 10 sets of squats the pain would go away and I could go heavy.
But now it’s too the point that I can’t squat with weight at all. The biggest wake up call that something was wrong was when I was doing isolated leg presses one day. I could put my normal weight on my left leg, but when I switched my right leg (the side of the hernia) I had to strip all the weight off the leg press and it still hurt to do it.

OP here, I do a shit ton of abs (militaryfag) and most of it is weighted. So I guess that didn’t really work out for me...

Honestly there dude, how has been your recovery and lifting form? Did you even have proper sleeping regimes, seeing as how you did x4 times squats and x2 deads in a week? How did you peform the reps by themself, were they clean or were they grinders?

Can you recall how and why exactly you felt like you pulled your groin?

Wait i had this a couple of weeks ago (i was holding pee for too long i guess) and it started to hurt on the same spot 3 days ago after coughing too hard (i had the flu) but now the pain is almost gone.
Is there any chance it will come back?

And yeah, coughing can cause a hernia as far as I read. Might want to get it checked out but if you don't have any proplems afterwards there shouldnt be too much of a deal

My recovery started pretty good, I mainted a good amount of stretching and flexibility, as well as sleep. But I did a bulk the beginning of the year and was lifting as heavy as I could for about 4 months straight. Which I’m assuming is what caused it because when I was going for new PR’s I wouldn’t say I had “perfect” form.

The reason I thought it was a pulled groin at first was because the pain would shoot down my thigh on my satorious muscle in pic related.

I noticed the bulge in my groin one day and I do not recall having any "event" that would have caused it. I had been led to believe my whole life that old people lift something heavy then BAM! hernia. The surgeon said that it was nothing I did, just the inguinal canal getting larger as the tissues shrink back due to age and it is mostly genetic.

I had the surgery a week later and was running again in a week. At two weeks, I was squatting and at a month I was back to my pre-surgery strength. I have no pain nor do I notice anything - it was like it just went away. I have no activity restrictions - the doctor said if it hurts don't do it, but nothing hurts. My only marks are the three holes in my abdomen from the laproscopic robot machine used for the surgery. My suggestion is get the surgery right away but.....

The bills so far are right around 35k and I know that many would not be able to afford that. You can live with it, but it will never get better, only worse and might become an issue like in OP's pic. The "robot" option was more expensive and the laproscopic option was more expensive so I had it done the most expensive way. The cheapest is a front incision but that takes longer to heal and I understand has more complications. I know a former marine that had one repaired by the VA via a front incision and at a year out was still having pain so, take that for what it is worth.

wtf, really? thought that shit throws you out for pretty much half a year until you can get active again. but that may depend on the severity and type of the hernia

Maybe he was lying, but the said most important risk factor was genetics. Before my surgery I had ultrasound to confirm the hernia and also check the other side - my question was if I was genetically pre-disposed, would I be back in a year to get the other side repaired? I don't want two surgeries if I can get it one-and-done but the ultrasound showed no hernia on the other side so I just has the one side repaired.

My hernia was bulging out about an inch. It looked like a half golf ball was under my skin. I can only speak about my experience but I was relatively fit to begin with. I can guess that an unfit fat smoker might take longer to get their strength back. In my case a 6" x 6" piece of flexible mesh was placed between the gut and the tissues. I don't feel it at all and I asked the doctor if I would ever PR my deadlift in the future. The doctor told me "It will be the strongest part of your body in that region. Other things will give out before the mesh does". Call me the bionic man.

it's not really genetics as far as I'm aware but is congenital. Most inguinal hernias are caused by a weakness/gap in the inguinal ligament in boys from birth caused by where the testes descend. In most men they heal over but in some they remain open and can be an abdominal wall weakness.

bilateral hernia repair isn't worth doing unless you have significant hernias on both sides and can be done laparoscopically - it has a much longer recovery time than one sided hernia repair.

OP, if you have a palpable hernia, and it is causing you pain, it needs repair full stop. The risk of it incarcerating (where a blood vessel gets trapped outside the abdominal cavity) and losing blood flow is high if you've ongoing pain in that area - and if that happens and you don't get the emergency surgery quick enough you could be left with a stoma or worse. Unilateral hernia repair (done laparoscopically) is a minimally invasive surgery and wouldn't be that horrendous to recover from. I'd expect 1-2 weeks of minimal activity, probably return to gym work in about 2 months.

Thank you for the clarification. I may have misspoke in using the word "genetic" when "congenital" was the term used by my surgeon. I think the general population including myself doesn't distinguish well between those two terms an ascribes any condition present at birth to "genetic". But the point that I think is important to make, so that there be no general fear of an active lifestyle or misinformation, is that these are not in most cases caused by a specific event but are problems exacerbated by a pre-existing condition - either genetic or congenital - and men should not feel ashamed about having them nor fearful of fixing them as they are easily fixable.

A hernia wont go away on its own, here's probably whats happening right now.
You've probably only have a very small hernia, which tend to get fatty tissue get stuck inside of it, crushing it a bit and cutting of bloodflow momentarily.
Thats the pain you're feeling.
Small hernia's usually just arent big enough for intestines to enter.
But thats also where the problem comes in.
Bigger hernias can result in the intestines kind of "leaking" so to say.
Now if you're unlucky and your hernia gets larger, which it will 100% guaranteed, its possible that part of your small intestine gets stuck inside of the hernia, causing the blood flow to stop and for that part of the intestine to become necrotic.
Thats bad.
This can potentially, although unlikely, kill you, but will most likely result in an emergency operation because of an ileus caused by the necrotic tissue, aswell as a 4 quadrant peritonitis because of a potential insufficiency in the small intestine, leaking stool into your abdomen.
You'd get some part of your small intestine removed, you'd probably get a stoma, be in a lavage program for a bit while on the intensive care unit and after that you'd have a long period of not being able to lift.
Now that is the worst case scenario.
If you go to to a hospital rn, or rather, make an appointment at your local doc, get him to diagnose you a hernia and then get an appointment for surgery, you'll be in and out of surgery after 2 nights in the hospital.
Depending on your age and the size on the hernia they'll either just close the hole with thread, or reinforce it with a mesh, usually in the TAPP or TEP technique.

Oh before i forget it, let me scare you a little bit.
We had a dude come into our hospital for an elective TAPP operation, he gets it, complecations ensue (no idea what happens, its now a disciplinary thing) and the guy ends up with a hartmann, which is essentially just disconnecting your large intestine from your rectum, closing of your recum blindly and then leading the descending colon out as a stoma.
So have fun with that thought.

Apparently, but I(not OP) used to train abs and do compounds every week, still got one. The only thing I can think of is me doing 2pl DL for reps while at 58kg bodyweight, but it could also be just improper squat form.
According to YT vids it might be due to sudden twisting motions under load.

You're probably aware of your legs.
As in you are aware that they're not dead decaying lumps of flesh.
Thats because there are connecting venes, arteries and nerves, etc. that come from your abdomen down your pelvis into the legs.
Now your pelvis isnt just a fleshy box, its a box with a few inlays, to keep, for example your small intestine from just sinking all the way to the bottom or up to your lungs.
The lower part of your pelvis is has this membrane called ligamentum inguinale that kinda keeps everything from spilling out.
However there's holes for veins, arteries, spem ducts and all that shit in there, which is just a natural "weakness" so to say.
If you're unlucky your body gets fucked over by that weakness, new hole open in that membrane, the existing hole expands, that kind of shit.
Thats pretty much what a hernia is.
