Day-for-night pretty much completely falls flat when the sky still looks bright in every shot. Also, 80% of cinematography is getting your lighting right. If you want to experiment with natural lighting, make sure the subject/focal point of the shot is positioned to be lit by sunlight. A simple reflector could help. Otherwise, get some artificial lighting; even something like a cheap desk lamp could be very effective.
